    Planer thicknesser problem

Some years ago I too had that very machine and found that the thicknessing table had a slight tendency to rock, which would cause the problem you've described I believe. It may be worth having a look to see if yours suffers from this problem.

    Georgian Bars

Thanks for the reply Deema. On a one sided moulding that would be fine. This is the moulding I'm going to be making - Moulding the first side is no problem - it's when I have to turn it around and do the opposite side that I reckon it'll go a bit scary and wobbly. Coping by hand is not a...

    Georgian Bars

I have a set of French doors to make, along with non-opening side panels at each side. The doors and side panels are divided up into 10 panes. The client has asked for the new doors to be made with a single DG unit to each door and panel with planted on Georgian bars. The only part of this...

    Axminster Ultimate Edge

I went ahead and got myself one in the end. Lifes too short and all that.... I got it all set up (very quick and easy) and after a bit of fiddling about got a few chisels which could best be described as 'wide screwdrivers' or 'paint can opening devices' and happily discovered that within...

    Glass cabinet doors

Rebate and beading is the option I'd go for. As for worrying about clipping the glass when pinning in the beads I use a square edged pinning hammer with a piece of material glued to one side. It simply slides along the face of the glass with no risk of any damage.

    Axminster Ultimate Edge

I'm considering getting one of these as an alternative to a bench grinder, mainly for establishing primary bevels on plane irons and chisels, with the odd gouge thrown in. I have a pathological aversion to traditional grinders having seen the aftermath of an exploding wheel. I realise that the...

So, do most of you use sketch up for your designs?

I pretty much exclusively use Sketchup for working drawings. I have a computer in the workshop and find it very useful to refer to a drawing to check a dimension or to be able to alter the drawing if the client calls and asks for a change. A lot has to do with how fluent you are with a computer...

Taking a plunge to kitchen cabinet making

About six years ago I made up some units for a mate who was setting up a spray finishing workshop in an old farm building. He'd partitioned off a small area to use as a kitchen. I made him 4 base units from 18mm Medite MR MDF, butt jointed and simply screwed together. The doors were just plain...

Back in the workshop (again) and back on UKW (again).....

This is starting to become a bit of a habit. Almost exactly a year ago I returned to the forums after a long absence and promptly disappeared again. Here we go again. Having spent most of the year involved in the purchase and refurbishment of a small farm in Bavaria (SWIMBO's birthplace and...

SOLD Veritas No 4 1/2 smoothing plane

In good used condition - nothing broken or chipped. The photos will probably tell you all you need to know but if you need any more info then feel free to ask. I've absolutely no idea what these are worth second hand so I may be way out, but I'm after £100 + p&p

    Gluing up panels

Thanks for the responses everyone. In the end I called the client, explained the ****-up (timber merchant admitted it was him and refunded me for the boards and said I may as well keep the 30mm) and told them there would be a two day delay. The client was OK with this so it's going to be 44mm...

    Gluing up panels

After a ridiculously long absence from these erstwhile forums (due in part to a s***ty start to the year, followed by a long period of hard-core indulgence in my other passion - fishing) I'm back. Apologies that my first post on returning is a question but there you have it. I have a bit of a...

    Bad luck comes in.....fours

Thanks for the kind words chaps (and any chap-esses). Today will be a good day - going fishing with a bunch of my late Uncles old cronies. It's hopefully the first of an annual get-together to have a fishing session in his memory. Ironically it's the day after the River Season closes, but that...

    Bad luck comes in.....fours

Those of you who may remember me will recall that back in September I had an accident at work and subsequently was diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetic. Radical changes to my diet seemed to get things under control and I was back on my feet again by the end of the month. Then the shyte hit the fan...

Free to a good home - some old stuff

An apology - since my last post several weeks ago I've been unable to do much if anything about getting things posted off to you. No sympathy required but I started feeling a bit 'woozy' at work whilst showing some 'so called' carpenters how to fit a staircase, and ended up passing out and...
