    Reccomendations/combination square

I've tried the Bahco and the Stanley ones and find that they don't always lock up properly square - not a problem for site carpentry (they're probably only less than half a degree out) but no use for furniture or fine work. I ended up buying this one from Axi...

    Gluing Endgrain - a question

What Epoxy would you recommend? Are there any one part epoxy glues (or am I being dumb)?

Stopped Rebates for back of cabinet

Unfortunately Robin top and bottom both very visible. I would have thought that this is such a common operation in cabinet making that there would be more comment. With regards the bench - It's found it's place in the workshop really well. I use it every day and can't imagine how I got along...

    Gluing Endgrain - a question

So it would seem that I have ben misinformed. I have to be honest my opinion is based purely on what I've read or heard from others. I've never performed any kind of test. Normally when I glue up anything I spread the glue with gay abandon and it ends up everywhere. I shall continue with gluing...

    Gluing Endgrain - a question

"End grain will not glue, leaving endgrain surfaces glue free will save glue and make your joinery neater with no loss of strength." this is on Workshop Heavens site here: http://www.workshopheaven.com/tools/Elm ... ml#SID=168

Stopped Rebates for back of cabinet

Thanks DC. I'm pretty well versed in using routers - both freehand and mounted in a table. I know that the rebate CAN be cut this way. What I'm interested to find out is what other methods there are that people here use and with what levels of success? Is the router the preferred method, or am I...

    Gluing Endgrain - a question

On the understanding that you can't achieve a worthwhile bond on end grain, would it be right to think that if making a straightforward biscuited Butt Joint the glue should only be applied to the biscuit slots and not to the actual pieces being joined?

Which joint to use....help and ideas please.

Thanks one and all for the advice. I have a domino, albeit the big beastie. I'm not sure if using an 8mm Domino in 20mm stock is going a bit overboard. If anyone has any thoughts on this I'd be keen to hear them. Of course I could always biscuit but the Domino feels more accurate. Or I could...

Stopped Rebates for back of cabinet

I've posted about a cabinet I'm about to build for the wife asking about which joints are best for the corners. which-joint-to-use-help-and-ideas-please-t83418.html Next question is about the rebates on the back of the cabinet to fit an inset 13mm Oak Veneered board. I actually want to make...

    Tape for glazing bars:

I've just finished a job for a client where all the bars were falling off and all needed replacing. I can't remember where we got tape from (although I'll find out) but what i can remember is that if the replacement bar is bowed in the slightest you'll never get it to bond properly. Also as...

    First set of turning tools

I'm about to dive into the world of turning with a new lathe arriving in a couple of weeks. I've ordered the requisite Keith Rowley Foundation Course book and have dusted off a full face shield. I'm looking at getting some tooling and specifically want to buy through Amazon (I have a load of...

    more coffee mugs

I'm getting my first lathe in the next fortnight and then I'm going to pester you until you give me a step by step walk through. To be honest I think that these are the first useful things I've seen come from a lathe. That they are also extremely cool to look at as well makes them project numero...

Which joint to use....help and ideas please.

SWIMBO has asked me to make a simple bathroom mirror fronted cabinet - no problem there I thought. The other bits and pieces in the bathroom are all from AW Oak and feature fairly simple, modern design rules. For instance, most right angle joints are plain butt joints - no visible joinery such...

    Purpleheart bed WIP

I'm looking forward to seeing this one through. Especially interested in details of the joints you'll be using and if you're feeling so inclined what decision making process influences the choice of one joint over another. Only if you're so inclined that is.... :D

    Exterior Wiping varnish (??)

Now thats what I call an answer. Thanks very much indeed - very helpful and I now know twice as much (if not more) about varnish than I used to!!

    Exterior Wiping varnish (??)

I'm making some doors for a clients log store and would like to try a 'wipe on' or 'wiping' varnish. I've heard a bit and read a bit less about this and from what I understand it's a mix of PU varnish and Oil. Will these two do the trick? If so, what proportions should I go for and what is...
