    LED lighting advice for carving?

In my old shed, I had a lot of fluorescent lighting and white walls and ceiling, but still needed spot lights, and small led lamps on individual machines, e.g. Lighting the bandsaw blade. I built a new workshop 2 years ago, and the main room is 10 M x 5M . I put in 8 square LED panels in 2 rows...

Thanks Tris, that does look viable, and acceptably humane - I may well give that a go. Stuart

Any experience of wood splinter gone into your finger? - How did you get it out?

My Dad back in the 60’s taught me how to do it if it was in a location that made it hard to get out himself. He’d pass me the tools, usually a fine needle and good tweezers, and the instruction to “get it out, do it quick and it will hurt me less”. If I was over cautious he would calmly repeat...

    Re-tiling bathroom tips needed

If you’ve ever been bequeathed tiles on tiles and needed to remove them, you wouldn’t wish it on someone else….

    Oil can.... for plastic?

Silicon spray? (Having dismantled several older models to repair them for friends/family l went from liking them to disliking them, sounds like they haven’t improved)

    Saving fuel

Our nearest petrol station is an Esso one, with a shell almost opposite Tesco another mile away. The Esso one is invariably cheaper than the Shell one, and for the last couple of years either equal to or less than Tesco.

What ideas have you had for reducing Electricity consumption

Whilst doing the hoovering this morning whilst symbols was doing the weekly shop, I had a brainwave. i do the hoovering every Friday morning, and if I were to do it only on the first Friday of the month I would save about 75% of the hoovering electricity costs. Genius?

    Laying lino in bathroom

All above comments are right. Difficult to work with a rectangle as you might with, say, more flexible carpet. If you are able to remove or cut out the existing covering though you have a good template ready made.pick pick on a long straight section as the bit you will line up first when fitting...

    Generator transfer switch

Roy, Re candles in the 70’s, I was a teenager at the time, and round our way candles became hard to find. My attitude to health and safety then was not that well developed! I used to make a few bob repairing valve radios and TVs, and ended those that were beyond hope (or beyond my capabilities)...

    Generator transfer switch

I have a henna and it is simple for us to unplug freezers and fridges to the Ginny. It wouldn’t be the same for any connected via switched fused boxes though. I’ve never felt the need to use a Ginny for the oil CH system, but contemplating inserting a 13A socket between the switched fused spur...

American Fridge Freezer fix or buy another

Fridges and freezers used to be very very simple. A compressor, thermostat and the only bit of electronics was a pot to set your chosen temperature. If there was a light inside, the bulb was the most likely thing to fail. Dishwashers can be nearly as simple. They used to have ”clockwork“...

    pincers

I was given a pair of these at Christmas 61 years ago when I was 7. Still got them and never wondered about that question to this day! Often wondered why they often cause me pain though when using them.

Likewise. My hybrid toyota auris is now 11 years old. I did 30,000 miles in its 1st year, and currently on 110,000 miles. The Toyota dealer says all cells test fine. No breakdowns or repairs.just annual servicing. Still no car tax to pay. why would I change it?

    Pallet Wood

I do do that if I have loads of the stuff, but they do jam the grate riddling. And I use the ashes so still need to extract them from the dust!

What ideas have you had for reducing Electricity consumption

Good idea! Did you have to remove the cooker hood to change the diameter of the holes for the gu10 fittings? On the face of it the diameters do look similar.

    Sharpening with old Record

I know sharpening in a title will get some hearts beating faster! I have a old Record rsbg6 which lives in an old shed and gets used mainly for rough stuff on gardening tools. It’s never used for woodtools, but it’s invaluable in that role as it spares the kit in the wood shop. record still sell...

What ideas have you had for reducing Electricity consumption

I was asked by MIL to change the bulb in a Bosch oven that is about 14 months old. Was astonished to find that it was a halogen bulb. I’ve still got a couple of halogens in a cooker hood, but can’t find any leds with small enough bulbs to be able to put the glass cover back on afterwards...
