    Wood store rebuild

Yet another day on the rebuild with the promise of rain by midday I did not expect to get much done but was hoping that I could at least get the gutter and roof battens on. But luck was on my side and I even managed to get the roof sheets on as well. Now all I need to do is build the last...

    Wood store rebuild

As promised photos of today's progress. At least it is at a stage that I can get the roof on and start on the last side. I had a little help from one of the woodturning club members.

    Wood store rebuild

Have not posted much on the progress of the wood store rebuild but I have got all the panels treated ready for assembly as well as make one of the two doors. Today being the first day of no rain and little wind I have dismantled what is left of the old shed and cleaned the decks for the new one...

    Hollow forms and pot.

Whenever you see things like this it gives you something to aim for even if it may take a few years just keep practicing after all Kim did not start making things like he has now like everyone started at the bottom so to speak

    Hollow forms and pot.

Some fantastic pieces Kim and a finish to die for. Would not expect anything less from you.

    Would YEW do this?

Personally I would not go with Yew in contact with any foodstuff if any chance it may harm someone how would you feel if it did.

    Wood store rebuild

During the winds I lost my roof on the wood store when I inspected it the whole store needed replacing as it had been up for so long. So long in fact that when I first built it I did not know much about woodwork. As can be seen from the amount of roof support I had. It took just over two days to...

How to minimise shrinkage and cracks in wet wood?

Green wood needs to be turned to roughly the same thickness throughout, if you do it different it will likely split, but having said that even thin turned to the same thickness may still crack. Slowing the dry process may help. If you do pot it into a plastic bag it will need to be turned inside...

    Bowl Interior Query

As mentioned turn it as fast as safely possible with small inclusions like you have you may not even feel it if you keep the tool presented correctly. In future turn, the outside on one day and leave it on the lathe when you are ready to do the inside quickly touch up the outside to confirm it...

    Second vice repair

It is a good little vice but there is some backlash in the two screws I would not want to use it on a milling machine even though each slide can be locked. There is a scale on the round piece but no corresponding one on the frame and one turn does not seem to equate to any measurement that i can...

    Second vice repair

No make on it, the jaws are 4"/100mm. I got this for £10 second hand and use it on my drill press. One of the handles was broken and the second one I broke

    Second vice repair

These are about the same size as the originals which are Ball Crank Handle I kept them simple. This is one of the originals and as can be seen some sort of Alloy casting

    Second vice repair

Before the winds and rain I started repairing a vice which had a handle broken when I brought it and the second handle which I managed to break. It did start well until the wind took the roof off of my wood store so had to spend the last few days moving one hell of a lot of turning blanks into...

    Here’s to turning in 2020

Nice addition to the stock Chas and some great mix of woods. I am moving a lot of my wood stock as the wind has taken the roof off of one store now need to rebuild as once the roof went it effected other parts of the store easier to rebuild the whole shed, luckily not the workshop or the...

    stabilising punky wood

+1 for CHJ.s recommendation. I use the same with great effect patience is a must applying the Thinned sander sealer one day and let it harden overnight. This may take a couple of days to get the finish you want but can be worth the effort. Have a look at my Walnut hollow form which I had to...

    Files and Filing

Don't file ali much and this was a case of I had to file the way I did because I was making a round hole square just big enough to get the smallest file I have other than the needle files Both square holes now filed and files cleaned and put away for the next job.

    Files and Filing

I did give them a brush with the card every so often as I could not find my chalk. And yes turning tools a lot more expensive

    Files and Filing

After today I will need to clean three files of ali, the needle file will be easy the other two will need a little more attention. Why are my files multiplying I will soon have more than turning tools
