Second vice repair

Before the winds and rain I started repairing a vice which had a handle broken when I brought it and the second handle which I managed to break.
It did start well until the wind took the roof off of my wood store so had to spend the last few days moving one hell of a lot of turning blanks into the second store.
I managed to get all the materials ordered and while I wait for them to start arriving tomorrow I had this afternoon free to complete the work on the vice.

I went for a simplified form for the two handles a piece of Ali bar for the cross pieces and some Coriam for the handles, two pieces of brass tube in each piece so that the Corian handle can rotate when operating the cross slides of the vice.

Neat and simple solution, always a compromise, getting as much swing as possible for ease/speed of use whilst reducing the risk of wrapping the knuckles on the bench.

These are about the same size as the originals which are Ball Crank Handle I kept them simple.

This is one of the originals and as can be seen some sort of Alloy casting

Neat job Dalboy. But to me anyway, that's a "funny looking" vice. What make is it please, and how big are the jaws? Looks like a 2-axis machine vice of some sort.

No make on it, the jaws are 4"/100mm. I got this for £10 second hand and use it on my drill press. One of the handles was broken and the second one I broke

OK dalboy, I'm not an afficianado, just wondering that's all. At 4 inches it's seems a bit small for the job but MAYBE, as it's 2 axis, perhaps it's originally for a horizontal milling machine?

It is a good little vice but there is some backlash in the two screws I would not want to use it on a milling machine even though each slide can be locked. There is a scale on the round piece but no corresponding one on the frame and one turn does not seem to equate to any measurement that i can tell.

I've got a similar one AES, slightly bigger though. They're normally listed as XY vices on ebay. Good enough for drilling but thats about it. There's so much backlash in the screws I wouldn't want to put one on a mill. Handy on the pillar drill though for getting centred up.
