    Your opinion

An opinion is neither right or wrong, it is like a scientific theory, it is proven or disproved by comparison to known fact or repeatable experiment. The other method is, does it still stand after the holder has been repeatedly battered for holding it? G

Disappointing review of British tradesmen from Norm Abram

I only poke fun at people I really like! BTW my avitar is an elderly Wyatt Erpp.

Disappointing review of British tradesmen from Norm Abram

I would be surprised if it did. I would have thought the point of a Norm A show would be to promote Norm and the products depicted, not the wonders of a foriegn TV show. Added to that the American tendancy to promote themselves at the expence of all others, (we used to do it, but the loss of...

Well that put a damper on the day, - laid off!

Thank you every one for your kind thoughts and optimistic outlooks. It was all bit of shock, we were still making brackets for a job we will never finish when the axe fell, so although we knew things were not good, there was no inclining that it was going to be yesterday, but at least we had...

Well that put a damper on the day, - laid off!

Thanks guys, its nice to have some positive thoughts today, and I have often found that as one door shuts another opens, etc. Time to take stock, sadly though I am one of those who was going to need some form of job after retirement. Gareth

Well that put a damper on the day, - laid off!

Went to work today, half way through the morning after a meeting with two suits (very suspicious) the boss came out and said he was closing as of midday, take our small kit and go. Looks like I am going to have more time to enjoy my new bench and workshop (see ugly duckling thread). Shame I...

The ugly duckling is finished (nearly)

I am pleased to say it is rock solid, and the all the nails were in just the one edge. I did have the lump in store to dry for eighteen months before I planed it flat. If it does move I can take a bit more off as needed. I may fit a small front apron when the vice goes on, but my principle...

The ugly duckling is finished (nearly)

I have just levered my new bench into place, it is not a thing of beauty and was never meant to be. 6 foot in length it is made from reclaimed timber, the legs are made from 3" x 5", which had been a 5 meter fake beam in a hotel bar, so two of the edges are pseudo wany edged, which adds...

    Removing snapped bolts

heat is always good, and if you have access to a welder, weld a bit of bar to the top of the studd and use as a tommy bar to unwind the naughty broken bolts. With the welding trick you get heat and a good purchase. Gareth

    utube aggro

My daughter defeated it, I think just by going through the boxes using my standard user name, so for me no change, and now its gone. I found you could confuse it by switching to another video from the alternative list, and then jumping back on the 'go back one page' button to the video you...

    Which Sliding Mitre Saw!!!?

I have just bought a Metabo KGS216M Laser Slide Compound Mitre Saw from Tool Stop, and I am very happy with it so far. I have tried a small amount of trench while playing around with some halving joints it seemed to cope Ok

    Bootsale: Spring has sprung.

I had a good haul at our local boot today (sorry no pics, camera batteries flat). A hand mitre saw for £5, a small marking gauge by Mawhood of Sheffield with an ebony and brass square by Tyzac £3. Plus two wooden rebate planes one 1,1/2" by Sims of London (taken over 1834), and an 1,1/4" by...

    Workbench Advice

If you are a 'newbie', make what you can out of what you have and concentrate on making things on it, rather than trying to turn your workbench into a piece of pristine furniture: you will never make anything on it if it really is your "masterpiece", will you. Aah a truth at last! I am...

    My PC keeps blinking

When I 'use' the aero peek button, which I don't, but you know what I mean, the desktop picture comes up with about ten interference lines diagonally across it. The lines are different in width and unequally spaced, and having found what caused the desktop to flash up I ignore it, but I am...

    Restoring an old typewriter

Most old typewriters stick because the lubrication has dried out, and the slots are full of fluff stuck to the gunk. I would have thought gentle cleaning possibly with meths would do the trick, but don't drown it. You would need to remove the rubber roller platain first and check that the...

Even **** Turpin had the decency to wear a mask!!

Bloke I know built his own hydrogen system from info of the net, it worked quite well until it blew up and wrecked his engine bay. I didn't think a large glass sweet jar was a suitable vessel.

Even **** Turpin had the decency to wear a mask!!

Everything these days is priced at just before the tipping point of where there is a noticble reduction in demand, the result, nobody has any spare money so there is no growth in the internal economy. The vampires are keeping the corpse in a coma.

    Engineering title e-petition

As part of the OED definition of an engineer is "Someone who maintains machines" then the petitions premise is wrong the person who maintains coffee machines or boilers is an "engineer" by English definition, and who the hell cares what foreigners want to call themselves. If however a certain...

Oh well I suppose they call it Retro!!

Someone once said the rarest 20th century furniture to collect would be unopened MFI creations, as none of it will survive, (hooray).

    Flat bar 5mm X 15mm supplier wanted

In hot rolled strip there can be variations in width as the standard is quite slack anything up to 10% so a slightly undersize strip might be found, but a 1mm reduction in width over a meter can easily be achieved with a good file.
