    Auto darkening welding helmet

Arc eye, burning like fire. Arc eye, when I close there's pain How can my eyes that sting so badly ever see again? Arc eye. (to the tune of Bright eyes) G

    Auto darkening welding helmet

Winky-blinky hats are fine, but I used a handscreen for most of my work for at least 40 years before I bought one, and still use it for tacking up. A standard welding helmet is also fine, you'll soon learn the welders nod. Gareth

    Horrific storm damage pictures

About a dozen trees down that I have heard of, a derelict building has been severely damaged, power has been out for some, and I had slight damage to my workshop roof - now fixed. There was nothing to report on the steam railway where I was finishing the decorations for the "Witches and...

    Auto darkening welding helmet

Always check that a cheap helmet takes a standard size protective lens, some of them take a lens size exclusive to that production batch with no replacement lenses available. So you run the risk of should you unfortunatly scratch a lens withn a few days of ownership you find you have to...

Big electric drill with great torque

That looks like the horrible type of gut-buster that was around when I was an apprentice. I have seen one of the bigger ones throw three blokes off when drilling deck holes. We swapped over to windy drills, much safer. G

    CAN ANYONE IDENTIFY THIS TOOL.?

Wouldn't of thought so, as the purpose of the tool is to present the drill at a set angle to the grinder and allow it then resurface the cutting edge. I have sharpened 1 3/4" drills by hand but its so much easier in a proper tool like that one. I suspect it has parted company from a designated...

    Anton Berg Eskilstuna blades

Interesting - some Eskilstuna mortice chisels came up on Ebay about 12 months ago, and as I recall went for quite a high price. Not knowing anything about the firm, what is it about their tools that commands such respect? I only found out after I bought a 20mm one for 10p, it was covered...

    A sharpening station for a fiver !

As a Student nurse I was wiping those bed cabinets over 25 yars ago, and they weren't new then, so they may not be as new as you think. G

    Anton Berg Eskilstuna blades

Their chisels are said to be some of the best made, so their plane blades should be of equal quality.

Dumb question. What tool makes these wood shavings?

Can you still get wood wool packing? I haven't seen that for years. G

    Spiral staircase restoration - rust!

two ways of doing the job. The first wire. cup brush on an angle grinder as suggested work small areas and put on a good quality red-oxide primer immediately you have worked over an area to seal out damp. Red oxide is porus so it will only buy you a short time before you must apply a gloss...

Lead-free solder - love the EU, not!

I always buy old solder sticks and rolls if I see them at boot fairs, 'ugger the EU! The most detrimental thing to any environment is a green!

    Unemployed to work for benefits.

the employers of masses of innumerate, illiterates no longer exist, nor will they ever again. Can't agree with that, because down here that is exactly the type of job that still exists. It was the high skill, manufacturing jobs that have gone. I have been made redundant five time from both...

    Breakfast bar

My better half wants me to make a small breakfast bar/ trolley for the kitchen. I am quite happy making the base, but the worktop is where I loose confidence. We have an offcut of the worktop to match the rest of the kitchen, but wifes design of the proposed bar requires one end of the top to...
