    Bill Pentz Discussion

Hmmm, admin. More admin. Bit of a turn off for sure. Personally I wouldn't be too bothered about the air velocity gadget. However I do think there is some merit in the partical counter. The key to all this is if there is actually something to be feared in our work shops. Are we taking our...

    Bill Pentz Discussion

HC, i take your point on the design of our machines. Its very valid and also needs to be discussed, maybe even in a different thread. I read an article recently - recently being sometime in the past two years or so - in Fine Woodworking were a reader had carried out some very clever work to...

    Bill Pentz Discussion

Maybe before we decide on the need, or not, to change all our dust extraction setups we could look at Pentz's number one concern - the dust. Does this super fine dust exist? If so, how dangerous is it? Then maybe we could look at his contention that all of our indoor extraction equipment are...

    Bill Pentz Discussion

I think I should summarize what Bill Pentz is saying in a better format. Firstly, as I would read it, he has primary concerns as follows: * hobbiest or small commercial wood workers are in a very significant danger from a super fine dust not visible to the naked eye. * This is because dust...

Rob thanks for the reply. Again, well done. I look forward to making the stool - imitation is the highest form of flattery!!! Eoin

    Bill Pentz Discussion

Hmmm, I've seen Head Clansman's post before and it would have been of the same layout as I was considering before reading Bill Pentz. What Bill proposes is different and quite specific and his technical reasoning seems sound to me as it brings back some of the fluid dynamics and thermofluids...

    Bill Pentz Discussion

My attention was recently drawn to Bill Pentz's website on dust extraction and the pitfalls for small scale or hobbyist wood workers. http://billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/index.cfm I found this site riveting as well as a disturbing. Personally I'm inclined to believe what he is saying...

    Alan Peter's music stool...Dun

Hey Rob, I've had this stool in mind for a while now but put it on hold to see how you got on. It looks positively noble. Wonderful work. Looking at Alan Peters design it appears that the stretcher tenon's are not through tenon's. Am I correct in this? How do you think this element turned out...

    Garden Shelving - Joinery?

Ikea is probably the best option However if you were to make them yourself I'd imagine the simplest joint would be a lap joint and glue as long as you can cut the 'laps' efficiently - a dado blade for example. As always, just a thought Eoin

A Day in the LN factory

Hmmm I suspect that the foundary was not part of the LN factory. I thought they outsourced that part of their work. Even before promptling I also thought the first plane being set up for casting was one of those Stanely shooting plane gizmos. We'll be keeping an eye out for that I'm sure. Eoin

polishing/buffing and keeping tools rust free

Boeshield - I'll never tire of saying it. Its the business. I've tried a few methods and this is the easiest and most effective. The climate around here is at least as harsh as Jersey. Full blast of the Atlantic and I'm reasonably confident my tools are protected. Eoin

    Waxing P/T Bed ??

OK, to mix this discussion up and to start a bit of a battle. :!: :?: :!: Its my understanding that silicone is a devious substance as it appears to have been removed until some types of finish are applied at which point it reappears with a vengence. It wa on this basis that I've done...

my DX5000 dust extraction system (with revised section)

Martin, I think the static was a fire risk but I'm open to correction on that. I can only imagine the collapsing pipe was a larger diameter and on industrial machine. It would be the leat of my worries at our scale. I'll try to dig up a few links. If I remember correctly it was on the Fine...

my DX5000 dust extraction system (with revised section)

Hey there Martin, I was researching the use of plastic pipe in the past and a regular reply was that static would be a problem and so plastic pipe shouldn't be used. As a solution to this I was thinking about running a piece of exposed copper wire through the duct and earthing it some where...
