    What wood?

Douglas fir is the traditional chosen material - but go to the marine specialists (down Hamble-area). Can't suggest a name top-of-head, but there are lots down there, not silly money either.

    which bandsaw for woodcarving?

The whole issue of 'sacrificial' guides is really good I think - many users have Lignum guides on bandsaws, and this is another variant. Zero-clearance, total support, quick to make and very effective indeed. I would like to see Steve's pics (or I could save up for the video :( )

My home town... could go see my dad at the same time and cover 'expenses'. So which is the best day then? Friday?

Scheppach 250ci Table saw in FS section

Giving up?! - in it for life now  Got an old Startrite 12" recently - for no really good reason, I just developed a liking of the big 'Made in England' ones. The Scheppach is unbeatable for precision and repeatability - when I finish tuning the Startrite it will (at best) be as good. I...

    Drill Press Einhell BT-BD501

One to look out for secondhand is the old Fobco - they crop up on ebay etc sometimes, very well engineered indeed. But a fair chance they will need a little tlc. Far better made than any lower-price new one in your price range. Definitely worth a look anyway. Good luck in the hunt!

    Small oak table

Well done, as Andy says the diagonal joints add interest and a lot of stiffness no doubt. i gather the top is screwed to the frame and will probably be OK (assuming the stock was very well seasoned and acclimatised to the room environment), traditional buttons screwed under and slotted into...

    Petition re: ash tree disease.

This is an interesting petition I think. I will sign it I expect, but it is weak. It says this: "I would like a tighter control on the importation of saplings and seeds. This will reduce the risk of introducing diseases that are harmful to our native trees." The second sentence is throw-away...

a stanley no 4 smoothing plane as my first plane

Had a look... not that one, way too much and not good vintage. Bite Gazpal's arm off... I mean say yes and thank you.!!! (and pay post, you will still be on a winner, GP knows his planes).

    Secret Santa 2012 UPDATE 2

Hi Waka - sorry if I missed something, but what is the deadline to ship? Mine's nearly done anyway (smug) but I do like to be organised...

a stanley no 4 smoothing plane as my first plane

Not getting into the pros of a 4 v 4&1/2 v 5 etc - but I do think Record is worth a mention too - the old Sheffield ones (around 50s - 70s). But the American Stanleys of the period you mention are really excellent I think - I have about 6 of them and I honestly use them more than the 5 Lie...

    which bandsaw for woodcarving?

May I suggest you keep an eye out for a second-hand Inca 205. The Incas have a fan club, and for good reason I think (I have a slightly bigger 260) - they are beautifully made, mainly aluminium with the very smart cast ali main frame which tensions the blade really well. For the capacities you...

    My first table saw

Well done, mighty fine saw indeed. I got one recently with the sliding carriage and extensions etc... cost way more than yours so you did well - they are really well built, and capable of being very precise. The single obvious thing is put a good blade on - you never know how good any cutting...

    Victorian chair steps - WIP

The PP treatment on ash looks very interesting. I am inclined to test on a few different woods - you seem to get control over degree of effect, and also it looks very natural. I am generally wary of staining, but this looks interesting. My foot supply ran out years ago so will need to source...

    Ernest Bennett Saws

Just had a look, worth knowing about. Probably overlooked as you say (in the one-off v small volume end). Ideally we need a big test / shoot-out. But none of us has the time or cash to buy and try all the alternatives - we all tend to rely a lot on recommendation and our own experiences. I wish...

    Victorian chair steps - WIP

Andy, this just gets better - the trad colouring and your research for example. Like Phil I have used it on my feet but never on wood yet... a swimmer you see, and foot problems come with that. This is really coming together - I wonder if you will give it a little 'ageing' later? The odd dent...

Fire Surround WIP and design advice needed.

Really nice pieces of oak, and all well on the way. Very personal taste all this, you understand. But I would go with Andy re the plinths under verticals. I also feel the top is a tads thin. You don't want to remake it and you don't need to, but a solid stock infill under would add visual mass...

advice - best crosscut blade for Tsaw?

update - got my Cutting Solutions 300 x 30 72T cross-cut today (only ordered by phone yesterday morning). It looked very good straight out of the box. Fitted in a moment - the initial test results are excellent indeed. Fantastic finish. I don't cut big volumes though I suspect this blade is...

    Startrite 12" TSaw

I found croppyboy's thread last year on this saw, but don't know a model number and need to find a manual. old-startrite-table-saw-what-say-you-t49853.html Anyway, for those interested, here's a few pics. First, the Cutting Solutions blade (72T cross-cut) arrived very fast, this morning. Just a...

    Victorian chair steps - WIP

Andy, I thought we all agreed finish by Christmas... you are in danger of being early :D Or is this actually your SS?? Very nicely cut hinge mortices, I would never dream of getting a router out for that either. But the depth gauge is very neat - but did you go half the barrel thickness less a...

    Serious Woodies!

Had the chance to play with all 4 of these yesterday, and it was an enlightening experience. Every single one is stunningly made, and they share one thing in common - structural simplicity, I mean no more components than they really need. It was the 2 small smoothers that I find very...
