    2009 Handtool Secret Santa

Well yesterdays plans went astray and ended up spending the time I had allotted for Secret Santa manufacturing rearranging machines in the workshop. Today however, I made some good progress. I'm in new territory with this years offering so the current item may be a working prototype - we'll...

Wrong I'm afraid - the work at height regulations created a regime where any height off the ground requires a risk assessment to determine the appropriate method of work. This could still be a sawhorse or a trestle if you can demonstrate that it is appropriate and have a safe and sufficient...

    new plane advice

As a first serious plane purchase something the length of a 5 1/2 is ideal and more than adequate for finishing machine straightened edges. The Veritas LAJ is the same length and would also be a good choice. Ed

    Utile for workbench

I reckon Utile would be a good choice - its fairly dense and hard and not ridiculously priced. The traditional choice of Beech is also worth considering. Ed

You can do it how you like - stay anonymous or not. Personally, if I've slaved over a masterpiece of toolmaking I'd like the recipient to know where it came from. Ed

You could still get the size of chamfer I'm talking about, even without the bigger overhang - it looks as though theres room across the front of your table. I like the shelf with the optical illusion curve - might nick that idea... Ed

A bigger chamfer like these; would lighten the edges and also casts a nice shadow onto the lower edge of the top. Ed

I don't know about banned on most sites - hop ups are allowed on my sites. The only thing not allowed tends to be trestles. This is one of those things people like to quote in a Daily Mail H&S gone mad way, but its not actually true in most cases. Ed

    The inevitable has happened...

I'm building a supermarket in Telford at the moment so am there a fair bit. Regrettably I know of no good woodworking shops in the area, although it may be I have not found them yet. Ed

    P & T combination or separates

I originally had a DW733 thicknesser, using hand methods for any planing parts of the job. I then purchased a Scheppach HMS260Ci planer/thicknesser which is a reasonable machine. However, I find that I can't be bothered to covert the Scheppach from one mode to another, so I use that as a planer...
