George Nakashima's work would be good inspiration for this. I have his book Soul of A Tree, but I imagine google would fetch up some pics. Ed

    mixing concrete

You've answered your own question there I think, density is the nub of the matter and as said by others, sand and stone are widely accepted to be denser than water. Ed

    mixing concrete

No its not, it will be a ton. A cube of concrete will weigh around 2.2 tons, so I suspect you will get about half a cube of concrete off a bulk bag. Ed

    Reaction to CCA treated timber

This is what it was; http://www.harlowbros.co.uk/timber-merc ... ted-timber So you're right Olly its not CCA, thats just what they still refer to it as in the yard. Maybe its psychosomatic, or my cold is worse than I thought, because this sounds fairly harmless. Ed

    Reaction to CCA treated timber

Yesterday and today I was preparing stock for a saw bench. It being Christmas I decided to use what I had, which was some CCA 6X2 sawn stock and plane it up to suit. I have a cough / cold anyway, so thought nothing of it yesterday when I felt worse in the evening. But after working on it some...

    Leather Tool Roll

Nicely made. Unfortunately leather tool covers are the work of the devil in my opinion, as I have had damage to both expensive saws and chisels stored in leather for only short periods. I avoid them now. Ed

    Axminster AWHBS450N Bandsaw

I went for the 5300 in that offer and its an excellent machine. Its massive and was a nightmare to get into my first floor workshop, but now its in I think its my favourite machine. I don't know how the quality differs between the machines badged 'plus' and the rest of them though. Ed

    Official Secret Santa Picture Thread

Thanks for the comments Damian. There has been some excellent toolmaking shown this year. Whilst I never made it compulsory that the gift should be handmade, in truth I see this as the essence of the event. It would exclude a number of people if making the gift was compulsory so probably not a...

    Tom's Tool Chest - Finished!

I've been looking at that saw. My local dealer will do it for me with the sliding table, width extension and outfeed for £1900 which is pretty good. I've still some reservations about Scheppach - the P/T I have is good, but I never really got on with the bandsaw. Ed

On the basis of no other contenders coming forwards, I would suggest the motion is carried and Waka is hereby appointed next years secret santa Coordinator. You just need to do a John Harvey Jones on the post office between now and then and we should be fine! Ed

    Cutting through tenons

You probably should cut a tapered mortice but I get away with a straight mortice and then a saw cut into a straight tenon which I wedge tight. Always worked OK for me; Ed
