    Fine Woodworking and Tablesaw Safety

Just spotted this thread which seems to have got fixated on rings and wrist watches. Surely the wider issue is FWW's scandalously casual approach to safety in general - one of the reasons I stopped taking it several years ago. Jim

    Absolutely! Jim

    American white ash finish

Yes, but what is meant by UV resistant? My guess would be protection from degradation of the finish which is an obvoius priority for boats. You are absolutely right about floors but WB finishes still have the disadvantages I referred to when it comes to furniture where different priorities...

    American white ash finish

I hesitate to take issue with Sgian on this but I am sceptical about his statement that most WB finishes now contain effective UV blockers. If that were the case, surely manufacturers would make claims about this very valuable property, and I have not yet found a maker that does. Where I have...

    Oak Stained by Iron

Not my post, but it certailnl does work. I have seen rally bad marking on oak from contact between water based glue and sash cramps during glue up and oxalic acid removed them. In some areas water can gave quite a high iron content so this is certainly a possible cause of the marks you refer...

What happens when your router collet is not tight

Glad you escaped unhurt. I hate 1/4" shank cutters, give me the rigidity of 1/2" cutters any day and no need to mess around with sleeves. Jim

    Oak Windows Finishing advice

I fear you are fighting a losing battle. The open grained texture of oak makes it particularly difficult to protect and I doubt that you will ever succeed, other than in the short term. Personally, I rather like the silver colour that unfinished oak takes on quite quickly, so no finish would...

    Floor finishing

Does anyone have experience of modern floor finishing products? I have to re-finish an Afzelia (so it's quite a dark reddish brown) floor. It will be sanded back to bare wood and I am aiming to finish it with a very hard wearing semi-matt finish. I have been unimpressed with the wear propertis...

    Any floor finishers out there?

I have to re-finish a hardwood floor I laid abou 30 years ago which will involve sanding back to bare wood. What is the best finish for a really hard wearing satin sheen? The floor is Afzelia so quite dark so will not stand a water based finish if it has that milkyness that some do. I am not...

    spiral ducting

I have the normal spiral. My installation is a bit complicated with a number of changes in level and angle. The great advantage of it is that you can easily steal a few degrees of angle change in the joints. I agree that internal joints are the best way to go. Mine are secured with three pop...

    job wanted UPDATED

Well done Melinda, you have obviously made a very good impression and, like all the other posters, I am delighted for you. If you feel like posting the occasional update I am sure we would all be very pleased to hear how you are getting on. Jim

    Finishing Burr Elm Pen

Personally, I favour leaving it with a narural surface, after all, as you suggest, burrs have a naturally fissured surface and for me that is part of their charm. As to finish, I gave just discovered Tru Oil gun stock finish and think it would be perfect for pens. Two or three very thin coats...

Workshop less than 1m from the boundary

Eternit cement fibre boards are grade 1 for fire resistance, look good in a variety of colours, are maintenance free and reasonably priced considering the advantages over wood or plastic. I used it on my timber framed workshop extension which is only about 150 mm from the boundary and I'm very...

    Tru-Oil

I recently used Tru-oil on a Holly recorder I made on the recommendation of the course tutor where I made it. He is a professional maker of baroque bassoons. Ihave to say I was very impressed by it. Available on line or at most gun shops. Jim

    Hard Wax Oil finish

As it nwill be more decorative in its function than protective, I would just apply it thinly with a cloth, 2 or 3 coats should do it. If, as I assume, you will be finishing it after the bases are assembled, this will give you better control over runs and the build up of finish in corners...

Woodwork on TV - Kevin McCloud's shed

Which just goes to prove that you can't please all the people all the time, but most respondents to the OP seem to have enjoyed it enough to keep watching. Jim

Anyone been sold dodgy shellac flakes recently?

I have had no problem with flakes going off and I do keep them for a long time. I suspect that the Liberon flakes you have bought were sub-standard (contaminated?) from the word go. Jim

    job wanted UPDATED

May I echo the comments of others. Fingers crossed and grab the opportunity if it comes. One of the truths of life is that we continue to change and develop throughout life - something that, as 21 year olds who think we are the finished article, we completely fail to appreciate. I suspect...

Anyone been sold dodgy shellac flakes recently?

Haven't had this problem, but you could try ordering some from Dictum in Germany. Theirs are not Liberon; I have had several batches from them without any problems. Jim
