    LN No9 Mitre Plane

Looks like this may be the answer for those who mourn the No 9 http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=73208&cat=1 With the PMVII blade it may well be better than the LN although there will doubtless be some who wil reject it because it doesn't look nice enough. I've not heard any word...

I'll send you a PM but probably not for a week or so. Jim

    LN No9 Mitre Plane

Who said anything about a breakthrough? Certainly not me. I was actually thinking of the tubes through which the side to side fixings run so as to mitigate the effects of seasonal movement of the infills. Karl Holtey has never claimed to be doing any thing revolutionary and, if you take the...

    LN No9 Mitre Plane

As implied by another poster, Karl Holtey has announced the end of his plane making although he has not quite finished yet. While his earlier planes were often inspired by Norris and other infill makers, none is a copy and they include measures to mitigate the inherent conflicts of planes made...

    LN No9 Mitre Plane

I'm not an LN fan - I prefer innovators to copyists - but I do have a No9 and am very fond of it. The 51 seems like a big old chunk of iron to be humping around especially for small stuff. If I was in the market ffor something like this I would go for the Veritas equivalent which seems to show...

Cleaning the oven - but not (very) Off Topic

My wife says go to Lakeland. Their cleaner is excellent for glass and the enamel and chrome bits. Just had a thought - surely the enamel on ovens is vitreous i.e basically glass so, as you say, why can't you use it on glass? Jim

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

Use RAW all the time and +1 for Lightroom. Quite apart from processing the image and generating a jpeg version, it is great for organising your images with a huge range of cataloguing possibilities, you can make it as simple or as complicated as you like. Jim

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

Steve, Is it possible that one shot was entirely lit by your workshop lights and another had some added daylight? If so, that would explain the phenomenom. I do agree about shooting in RAW mode though, it makes it much easier to adjust the white balance after you have taken it. Glad to hear...

Will a spindle/bobbin sander help me? vs pillar drill

AES, No, the drum doesn't rise ands fall, except to the extent that the normal rise and fall of the pillar drill's chuck can be used. Mine has a slack area of travel at the top of its range where the spring return is ineffective so I do use thatto give a bit of variation in the area of...

Will a spindle/bobbin sander help me? vs pillar drill

Make yourself one of these and save the money you would spend on a bobbin sander with inserts for various size drums, it works brilliantly with no detectable dust escaping when connected to my shop vac. I have used it extensively and have found no disadvtantage in the lack of the limited rise...

    Hand tool aesthetics

I have some S53 blades and it is true that they don't respond well to normal sharpening techniques. I use diamond paste on lapped plain Corian plates which works well and does not take too long. I can confirm that the negative comments about these blades that have been qouted are, in my...

    West systems Epoxy coating advice.

I agree. The point about kiln dried timber is, I think, a red herring. Kiln dried timber can be unreliable if it has been unsuitably stored and will still be less pleasant than air dried to use. Given the choice I would always use air dried but in terms of measures to ensure equilibrium I...

    Sanding detailing on a door.

I'm inclined to agree with the scraper idea. The problemwith sanding mouldings is that you tend to lose their crispness. Making a scraper is not that difficult - cut out with a hacksaw then refine the shape with a dremel or similar. Jim

    West systems Epoxy coating advice.

If it is to be exposed to direct sunlight you may have problems with UV degradation over time. This is why epoxy sheathed boats are always painted. Jim

    Wadkin RT Lathe restoration

That looks really cool, Mark. Are you keeping it or have you restored for sale? If so, I'm sure there will be plenty of interest. Jim
