    Bench top router table

The knobs for the clamps are Trend. All the fence hardware is from a Rutlands Dakota box-set that includes quite a few knobs and T-bolts.

    ..

I looked into this a while ago and this was what I turned up: http://www.inbristol.org/homepage.htm I never got as far as having a look round before deciding to set up my workshop some distance from home, but it looked pretty good for hobby type stuff.

    Planer/thicknesser changeover

I think the Sedgwick and Mortens planer/thicknessers don't require you to lift the planing beds. The vast majority have the tilt-up/lift-out style outfeed tables. A lot of the better machines are very fast to change, the Scheppach HMS260 I have is about 30s to change over but I'm not convinced...

    Charnwood or Record

I have the Record TS250-RS (presume if you are looking at the Charnwood 650 it's the TS250C you are after, which as far as I can tell is the same saw with a smaller cross-cut beam). I like the saw, it's mostly well made. There are a few things that irk me about the design, but the core saw is...

    Your thoughts on www.powertooldirect.co.uk

I used Folkestone Fixings (http://www.ffx.co.uk) recently and was very impressed with their service - exemplary communications and speed of delivery.

    Spiral router cutters

Slow feed is damaging to any cutter, in particular carbide ones. If you feed too slowly, the cutter will essentially be rubbing against the wood at high speed rather than taking decent chunks, i.e. lots of friction. The slow movement along the workpiece further encourages the build-up of heat...

    rutlands

I tried to place an order over the bank holiday, unfortunately it didn't go through because of security issues with my card (I get this a lot for some reason!). I called them on Tuesday evening to put my order through, the assistant was very helpful and honoured the discount without even needing...

    dust/chip extraction

The oil drum would be used as a drop box for the cyclone, which if the cyclone is any good should catch pretty much all the waste. You could probably run without the bags if you wanted to save the space, personally I'd leave them on.

Does the table top HAVE to carry the weight of the router?

Andy, if these spindles are what I think they are then they are 3 phase induction motors and a great deal quieter than the noisy brush motors in routers. Speed control is achieved by variable frequency drives. To the OP, at somewhere between 5-6kg your spindle will weigh in similar to a 2000W...

    dust/chip extraction

I'd agree with this general principle. The advantage of a LVHP system is that fine filtration doesn't cause a big drop in flow rate, because it can generate a high differential pressure across a fine filter cartridge. The disadvantage of these systems is that they max out at low flow rates, so...

    Router morticing

End mills, like slot drills, don't have a defined single number of flutes. Usually though end mills are four flute and slot drills two. I think the greater spacing in the flutes means slot drills clear chips out quicker (though end mills are perfectly capable in this regard), the flip side is...

    Router morticing

Be aware that HSS will dull quickly, especially if cutting engineered materials. I prefer carbide end mills for morticing. Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2

    Table saw taper jig

I have need to create a jig for doing tapers properly on my table saw. The saw is a Record TS250-RS, which has a sliding beam to the left of the blade (basically a format/panel saw style sliding table). I like the simplicity of home made designs such as Seaco's in this thread...

Descaling Hot Rolled Mild Steel. Success!!

Eeek - that'll make me think twice the next time I'm down the chippy! Great tip, thanks for sharing.

Can anyone recommend a decent MiG welder?

I think this is a little mixed up? Argon and Helium are very inert gases (they are noble gases and due to the atomic structure are very non-reactive) which means you get excellent shielding from reactions, but poor penetration. CO2 isn't as inert; you get much better penetration at the expense...

    Shelf strength technical query

Steve, I think you will find that the stiffness of a shelf is related to the cube of its thickness - a rectangular section's second moment of area is w.h³/12. So making it thicker is even more beneficial.

Forums and magazines: a blurred line

But as Benchywayze says, even if you are Woodworking "by hand" you are still using tools. Tools which are (usually) mass produced out of metals in factories predominantly by machine. A table saw in the home workshop still requires operation by the human hand, the only difference one could argue...

    DIY Windows and Building Regulations

Thanks for all your responses. I know the feeling, trying to get to the bottom of what standards need to be met in intelligible terms is something of a challenge! As with a lot of these things, there isn't a universally adopted set of terminology with different ratings that mean different...

    DIY Windows and Building Regulations

Apologies if this has been covered already, but I did a couple of searches on the forum and couldn't find an answer to my specific question. I am thinking of making a couple of windows up for my Mum - she has a bay window and a large window half way up a staircase that leak air through the...

Where to buy PAR hardwood boards to make a bookcase

Some companies supply wide hardwood panels ready for furniture making. Robbins timber in Bristol is one - a 405mm wide American white oak panel 18mm thick will set you back £44 for a 2.1m length. That's about £81 per cubic foot which is expensive compared to buying rough timber, but I don't...
