Just bought a new Axminster 5 1/2 Jack plane..

Why use diamond stones and sandpaper? The whole point of diamond stones is so you don't need to muck about with sandpaper. Given the price of the ultex stones I can't see a good reason to spend £22 on sandpaper (which will last a few months at best) when you could just get a stone for that...

How do you get storage under the plinths?

Yes, it's bad, buying my own kitchen instead of making one..

Interesting thread. We're looking at a new kitchen soon, but would like slightly higher than usual units (worktop height of 100cm). This looks like it will be expensive, I assume none of the normal lot will do custom sizes...

Full Face vs Half Face Mask

You don't need dust proof eye protection for wood. You need impact resistant eye wear to stop thrown chips hitting you in the eyes. The full face mask avoids needing to wear separate goggles, which is handy, but it's very expensive compared to a half mask plus goggles. Also if the mask becomes...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

My first attempt at making dovetails. I'm calling it a success.

    River Table WIP

I have done a bit of epoxy work with glass cast recently, this might be of help? What did you buy? Glass Cast 3 (they also sell 10 and 50 variants for thicker pours). Where did you buy it? I got it from Easy Composites. How much did it cost? Cost about £65 for 5 kilos. How much did you use at...

    Getting Utile near Manchester

I did a run down to Hymor this morning. Actually not that bad - about 40 minutes each way. Excellent yard, they have a great selection of timber there and were very helpful.

Photographing work in customers house - a violation or not?

People have a lot of strange ideas about what you can and can't take photos of. You were in her house with permission so I don't think she has any grounds to complain. Not to mention as noted she's not going to pay for a solicitor. £15 an hour is pretty cheap, I'm not sure what she's expecting...

    Tablesaw safety

I have needed a seatbelt once and I was very glad of it. I got away with bruising from the pretensioner and airbags rather than serious injuries. I think you'd have to be completely mad to drive without one.

    Getting Utile near Manchester

Tree station are local stuff only, so no chance. :( Atlantic is worth a shot - I've used them before for ply, didn't realise they had less common hardwoods. Seems from their website, probably not: "We stock three species of timber suitable for joinery work, Pine, Sapele and Oak." Hymor have...

    Getting Utile near Manchester

Thanks. South Manchester, so they're about as far as Hymor, I'll keep them in mind though.

They're strangely resistant to seatbelts in America too...

    Getting Utile near Manchester

Anyone know of a supplier of Utile near Manchester? I've been through the sticky, but they're mostly miles away (the closest being Hymor in Stoke). I did try Trafford Timber who have it listed, but they have no stock for a month or two, so that's a bust.

    Dovetail Joints question

I was cutting some dovetails in pine last night. I had started with what I thought was a sharp chisel, it felt sharp, but when I tried to pare a sliver with it, it was clearly not sharp enough - felt a bit as you describe. I gave it another pass on the stones and really made sure I got a good...

    Corrosion Inhibiting Coatings

ACF50 is good stuff, works on cars at least.

    Aerosol Spray Paint on Wood

Machine sprayed with expensive airbrushes essentially. Much like cars. The factory finish is very hard to match by hand because it's so tightly controlled.

    Heated Vests

    5. Down jacket. Always good to have as an extra layer, especially if you're stopping and starting.

    'User friendly' Central Heating Programmer?

Hive does water as long as you buy the correct version, there's a version with just heating and a version with both heating and water.

    bread board finish

I was going to suggest flaxseed oil, which is just food grade linseed. I've not used it on wood, but it seasoned my cast iron pans a treat.
