    Quite the barn find

Fantastic find, but the worms do like to munch it! It's a great timber to use, but you may find that much of it is unusable due to said worms...but you might get lucky and find some which is clear and free. To illustrate the case in point, I went to Yandles last year and picked up a few boards...

    Good quality hardware/ironmongery

Marches is pretty good, if a little expensive when you factor in delivery. I used their 65mm 'top quality' brass butts on the blanket chest I made last year and I've just received another pair for the current chest currently under way in 'shop (amongst lots of other stuff). They also supply the...

    oil/Arkansas stones

Just to throw another option into the equation, some years ago I used Spyderco ceramic stones which were pretty good as I recollect. The main problem with them was that some, not all, tended to be slightly 'bowed'. The ultra fine one I used (then available at Ax, but no longer) was true. The...

    Kids climbing frame- dowels wood?

The best place I know of dowels is here in the Lake District. They sell an amazing selection of sizes and materials - Rob

    Bar Stool(s)

Many thanks, much appreciated, but with this particular job I never want to see another bit of sandpaper again. Ever - Rob

    Good quality hardware/ironmongery

I use HE Savill and Marches for decent quality brassware. As for slotted steel screws, now-a-days they're rarer than hens teeth - Rob

Does anyone have a sharpening question?

I did say 'more or less' so yep, not straight out the breadmaker, but within about 20-30 mins. Doorsteps r'us  Forget a 'cross cutting knife' , this thing is on a par with a freshly honed Japanese chisel (of which I have a few) so it's seriously sharp  - Rob

Does anyone have a sharpening question?

For cutting hot bread more or less straight out the breadmaker Mike, you need something with a wicked edge. I do like hot, fresh bread, 'specially the first crust! - Rob

Can't get 25 x 25 batten straight for love nor money - help

With all this 'dampish' weather we've been having of late, the MC (moisture content) is liable to be pretty high if it's been stored in an open air warehouse. Moving it back indoors to say, a warmer workshop will make it instantly start to dry out and as it does so, it's liable to warp and...

Does anyone have a sharpening question?

I use a large, white paper steel Japanese chef's knife for cutting bread and it'll go insanely sharp with the Spyderco ceramic rods. Completely lethal and SWIMBO is terrified of it  - Rob

Does anyone have a sharpening question?

That's debatable Mike. InstaG is a good platform with loads of interesting stuff from all sorts of makers and it's quite easy to be selective about who you choose to follow and who follows you. Should the follower called 'Jacob' start to give me any grief, he simply gets 'blocked'; end of story...

    The very same! - Rob

Does anyone have a sharpening question?

Worryingly, somebody called 'Jacob' just this very morning started to follow my InstaG account  - Rob

    Inca bandsaw

Axminster like Scandinavia; if they won't answer your emails, pick up the dog n'bone (that's a 'phone  ) and give them a ring - Rob

    Inca bandsaw

Blade length from memory is 73.5" which is exactly the same length as required on my current small bandsaw If you're dithering over whether or not you need a tablesaw, the answer is that you don't, especially in a smallish workshop. What you do need is a really good shooting board; I've made...

    Inca bandsaw

I had one of those for donkey's years; great little saw and as far as I recollect it never broke a bandsaw blade. I used the 1/2" 6tpi Diamond Ground blades from Ax (and still do on my current small bandsaw) on it and they were superb - Rob

Can you flip a bandsaw blade?

Absolutely, 100% spot on. Always try and think your way through a project by asking yourself a) what's the next step and b) what's the easiest way to do it? At one time I used to have muzak droning on in the 'shop which was usually R2 on the wireless, but the inane witterings of Bruce, Vine...

Hand planing multiple components to same width.

This is the set up I mentioned, using a piece of Brown Oak as an example. The direction of travel and rotation of the cutter are illustrated by the green arrows, the cutter being just proud of the timber: The push board has a large piece of ply screwed to it: ...so that as the cut starts...

Hand planing multiple components to same width.

Precisely; it's not a 'standard' router table procedure and one that needs to be approached with some care, bearing in mind that there's a router cutter spinning away in the middle of the table. I've converted an existing push block for the p/t (which I never use) by attaching a largish...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Couple of things done recently, first up a... ...fairly chunky old mug tree made as a last minute request from No.1 son in Londres. Oak with American Cherry pegs and to give an idea of scale that base is a full 45mm thick. Second up a picture; an original antique woodblock print of Nagoya...
