thanks Phil. when you have a second I would be interested to see the counterbore, but no hurry. I can picture what you mean.

Moisture Resistant MDF ( green )

the hard wax oil sounds like less faff tbh, and probably as cheap by the time you have bought the various parts to my suggestion

Moisture Resistant MDF ( green )

well, firstly wait for some other opinions and see what people come up with- you may prefer it. I find oil based varnish hard to buy online. You need to look at the tin and find something that tells you to clean the brushes using white spirit. The last lot I got was from wilko but it isnt on...

    table lamp

does that centre do the counterbore then? I had assumed that it was a drive centre which centred into the correctly sized hole. I can only go on YouTube, where the person said not to go from each end, because meeting in the middle was difficult to predict. do you have a source for the...

Moisture Resistant MDF ( green )

ah yes, I didn't read it properly! I would go with a matt, oil based varnish, thinned down so that you can wipe it on nice and thin. I would probably also put some tung or boiled linseed oil in it too, roughly thirds.

    Wax on Wax off .........

I like to have some microcrystalline wax about. it would be fine for your sled and for various other jobs. I am not familiar with the miniwax stuff so I dont know if it is comparable. Many of the US finishing products are hard to get. There are a few exceptions, but in general I would say that...

Moisture Resistant MDF ( green )

what have you got? the killer may now be that you have now applied the wax and getting something that will go over that is problematic.

Rutland router cutters - Any good ?

it amounts to the same thing, just depends where you measure from. one is from the horizontal, the other from the vertical. You just need to work out whether to run your piece vertically or horizontally. I made some long grain mitres once using a 45 chamfer bit and a rigid setup. I wasnt that...

    table lamp

I need to make a housewarming present for a friend, and I have always fancied making a table lamp so plan to kill two birds with one stone. It will be fairly simple I think, but I need to see what style of furniture they like so it compliments. I am thinking it will be 200 diameter at its...

Rutland router cutters - Any good ?

I have one of the big sets from rutlands bought years back. I dont use most of them often, and some will never have been used at all but they are handy to have in case and they were cheap at the time. they are alright, quality wise. Mid table. If one blunted through use I would probably...

They are the rarer belly button callipers, Chris. Worth a fortune on ebay.

    Circular saw

Is a 70mm depth of cut necessary or is it a guess? I think I would rather have a smaller lightweight saw that would cut if I could get away with it and make a cut from each side on the odd occasion that I needed to. Obviously you know what you need it for and how often. 70mm is an odd size at...

    Fixing for box lining

what finishes do you have, or is it a matter of buying something? I struggle with the maple/sycamore and something darker combination tbh. I would brush on shellac for the maple but ideally I prefer an oil on the darker timber. Although I prefer to avoid different finishes on the same item where...

    Removing scratches from brass.

Can you take a pic? You can certainly DIY it but you will need some bits to do it with. The polishing shop has a guide on it, but it amounts to wheels and compounds on a grinder or polishing machine. I don't see why you couldn't mount a wheel on a lathe or on a drill.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

how thick are the floorboards and how are they fixed to the ply? Potential movement would worry me here. I do like the top though, it will look lovely with a finish on it.

    Fixing for box lining

I bow to Custard's greater knowledge and would always recommend doing what he suggests rather than what I do.

    Fixing for box lining

for me, it would depend on how tight the fit was but CA has no gap filling properties. I dont really like the stuff because I usually end up sticking myself to something. My first option would be to try and wedge them in, particularly the bottom which I presume is the first piece to put in. A...

    Makita 18v batteries

I know that you have said "genuine" but be wary of any that are too cheap and are fakes/counterfeit. it certainly used rot be a problem and I doubt that times have changed. the compatible ones, whether good, bad or indifferent are at least not pretending to be Makita.

    Axminster stock levels

I am a big believer in planning. Not to the point where I would fill my car with bog roll, but carrying a few extra meals for the family in the cupboard is prudent during the winter (particularly this one). A tin of soup, tin of toms, some part baked bread, bag of risotto rice. A fivers worth of...
