    It's a Woodblokewoodgloat!

Hence the terms "Top Dog" and "Under dog". :D This is an extract from the 1876 "Yale Review" "The saw-pit was a rude structure about seven feet high, made of strong posts set in the ground wide enough apart to hold one or two pieces of heavy pine timber, and the sawyers, one above and one...

    It's a Woodblokewoodgloat!

Lovely stuff. Shame about the staggered split down the RHS, but still loads of usable timber there. Rob - you know what you have to do. Go on - you know it makes sense! No point waiting for the VAT to go up. :D

After being the under bidder twice at £665 for a secondhand Startrite 352, I've just bought a brand new Startrite 352E from Yandles. £799 less £40 in vouchers as a peace offering following an ordering FUBAR, . This is a very solid and powerful piece of kit. 2hp motor (compared to 1hp on the...

Why not just use the cubic foot info? Just type "cubic meters to cubic feet" in to Google to find out that 1 cubic metre = 35.3146667 cubic feet

    First day at Uni

Yep! And quite nice when they go back again. We missed our 2 dreadfully to begin with, but got over it eventually, and certainly by lunchtime. You will find that the 6 pack you put in the fridge is still there when you go back to it the next day, there will be biscuits in the tin, your...

    New boiler

We could start a sweepstake. My bid is £2,950 inc VAT edit: Actually, with a new position for the boiler, new flue thru roofspace etc. make that £3,450.

    New boiler

Our plumber didn't plumb into drains. Just dug a soakaway, bag full of rubble, and covered over. AFAIK it doesn't have to go in to the main drain. Methinks there's a job creation scheme going on here. It'll be interesting to see what your quote is. don't hold your breath - we had 4 guys...

ideal moisture content for making furniture

I think it also depends on where abouts you live. In Devon, even kiln dried oak stabilises indoors at about 13%. I have some air dried English Oak which has stabilised at around 15% after 3 years, and which hasn't changed in the last year. I suspect these figures would be lower in the east...

    New boiler

Not a problem DW. Originally we had loose boarding across the 6" joists with 4" of insulation underneath. Obviously increasing the insulation to 10" raised the level to 4" above the joists, so I had to lift the boarding, add additional joists across the existing ones and lay the additional...

    New boiler

A vital one - it stops the boiler cycling. Once the rad stats are closed because the room temperatures are up to the desired setting, hot water returns to the boiler without passing through the rads and the boiler switches off. If the rooms stay up to temperature, the water in the boiler will...

    All sludged up?

Roger - if that doesn't clear it you may need apower flush. This is an oscillating pump that you fit either side of the CH pump and which surges water in both directions through your system, rapidly alternating direction. This clears out the sludge PDQ. gathering it in a container that's...

    SIP Planer thicknesser problems

Another cause of wavy lines may be because you have not completely flattened one face of the timber on the planer before feeding it through the thicknesser. It only takes a very slight irregularity on the flattened face to cause the piece to rock as it goes through the thicknesser, and it can...

    Ancient Bookmatching

Yep - it's a stunning building isn't it? 1900 years old and still as sound as the day it was completed. The dome is 142 ft across and entirely unsupported - some achievement when you consider that when it was built we were still living in Anglo Saxon round houses. Apparently it's made...

Oh no! Another request for bandsaw advice thread.

£450 + VAT = £528, plus (say) £170 for a VFD = £700. Then I have to get it from Yorkshire to Devon, and get a fence etc - so all in I guess there would be no change out of £800, with absolutely no g'tee whatsoever. I think I'll keep looking for the time being - but thanks for pointing...

Oh no! Another request for bandsaw advice thread.

Thanks Alan - not sure I have the space for such a big beast tho'. Also by the time VAT has been added plus a VFD, I would be in for about £700 - and that is getting close to the price for a new Jet 16 or Axminster 4300 which both come with a warranty. Decisions decisions!

Oh no! Another request for bandsaw advice thread.

So where are all these second hand Startrite 352s that you are supposed to be able to buy for around £350 - £400? Tonight one went on Ebay for £665. How similar is the 351? I'm sure I read somewhere that they are identical in every way to the 352 except they are single speed rather than...

    Any Battle of Britain enthusiasts?

It would be dangerous for any nearby boats. A lightning pilot I knew was leaving Cyprus in the late 1960s to return to the UK, and as he lined up for take-off was told by the Tower that the circuit was clear if he would like to do a fly-by on departure. **** duly obliged at Mach 1.2 and blew...
