    Don't fancy the colour!

Seems like a good idea, but as with most wave energy systems, it will be interesting to see whether the first SW gale trashes it like all its predecessors.

    Now that's tragic!

    Suggestions for Iroko finish (outside)

Morgan - I'm making some exterior doors and windows from iroko. If you want to filter out the UV that will turn the wood grey then you must have some sort of stain as to use a clear oil is a bit like using clear glass in sunglasses. After a lot of research I've settled on using one coat of...

    sign making and letter cutting

Or try cutting the letters freehand with a chisel after setting out using printed letters off your pc. With a bit of practice you can carve letters surprisingly quickly and they look much cleaner and crisper than routed letters.

Windows - a first attempt - WIP pics

It's been a while, but both upstairs windows now installed.

    Brown oak coffee table.

Well, in the interest of balance, I really like the rounded edges to the table top. It should make it very tactile and of course be kind on the shins for those bumping in to it. I also like the resin infill in preference to leaving the cracks open to get filled in with biscuit crumbs and...

    Window frame advice

Dee - I've discovered that there is a lot of bs talked about windows. I've now made 3 singles in iroko (which are shown here) and I'm nearing completion of 2 sets of 3 bifold doors (WIP thread imminent) and I've still got a double and a triple window to build. The BCO has been no...

    Brown oak coffee table.

That's a really interesting way to deal with split character oak. Thanks for posting Mark. Looking forward to the rest of the write-up.

Folding sliding doors - advice on locks please?

Thanks Dibs. When you say a cylinder lock, do you mean a Euro cylinder lock? Or one of those universal cylinder bolts operated by a hexagonal star shaped key? I guess if I got some locks that were "keyed alike" then at least i wouldn't be faffing with multiple keys. Thanks Jason.. Looks like...

Folding sliding doors - advice on locks please?

I'm getting to the final stage in my bifold door build and beginning to think about locks. I have 3 doors, each 60mm thick, laminated from 3 layers of iroko, and opening outwards using Centor E3 top hung gear. The end door will act as an occasional back door, although I suspect we may use it...

    solstice

Not really correct. The definition of the solstice is that it occurs on the 2 days in the year when the sun is furthest from the celestial equator - i.e. furthest north for the summer solstice (21st June) and furthest south when it's the winter solstice (21st Dec). In the northern...

    Last kitchen of the year

Blimey! And there was me thinking I was pushing the boat out paying £450 for an extractor!

    solstice

RogerS has more or less nailed it. To save me typing it all out, it's all here. It's the low angle of the sun that creates winter in each hemisphere, and the slight additional proximity to the sun in Dec/Jan has minimal effect.

    solstice

To be pedantic, whilst 21st Dec has the least daylight, the sun continues to rise later until 1st January. The earliest sunset occurs on 14th Dec. It's just that after 14th Dec, although the sun starts to set later, the sun rises later by a greater amount. Conversely, after 21st Dec, although...

    Last kitchen of the year

Cracking job Bob. Never even heard of a downdraft extractor before. Any good? Any advantages/disadvantages over the hood type?
