    Woodies. What to do?

If you have no immediate need for them, why not just leave them on the shelf until a need makes itself obvious? You might feel a bit miffed if you convert them all and then a job crops up for which you could have adapted one

    DIY Panel Clamp

They look effective enough, but a bit complicated for my taste.I have used a much simpler device;two strips of 9mm ply, longer than the panel is wide, two spacer blocks a smidgeon thicker than the panel is thick and a softwood wedge to drive into the gap left at the edge to tighten things up.After...

    Hand planes

Interesting idea-do you give the owners of the furniture detailed instructions about permissible moisture content in their homes?

    Quangsheng Router Plane

I have a 271 and I think it has advantages over the new arrivals. The Lie-Nielsens share the small footprint and the ability to work in tight spaces without the protruding handles getting in the way.The lack of a fine adjustment screw is of no great consequence;I just move the cutter a little...

    Startrite 12s1 blade guide options.

I have an 18-S-5 and have used a couple of 24-T-10's so I have a bit of familiarity with the range.I have seen both plain guides and bearings on them and the bearings had the same eccentrics as those in the link above. The assembly could be moved backwards and forwards to position the guides in...

    Bandsaw blade wandering

Just to be clear, were you using a rip fence at the time?

    cabinet pitch - hand planes

Does anybody know whether the planes with cabinet pitch would have had narrower mouths?

    Using a flush trimmer help

Be very careful with a table router.I freely admit that they scare me and I regularly use an overhead router, which I believe to be safer. In both instances it is essential to feed the work against the cutter rotation and I hope you won't feel insulted if I ask whether this is the case? You also...

Router - Where did I go wrong?

Trend are normally pretty good.I have never seen a spring in a flush trimming cutter. There are two main types of flush cutter-one has the bearing at the bottom and the other has the bearing at the top-which type was it?

I can tune a bandsaw blade

I'm glad my bandsaw has a tension gauge.A few years ago I was using another, quite old, machine and had to change the blade. The replacement was a Starret and came in a box that recommended a blade tension of 12,000 psi.Since the saw had a tension adjuster that worked by moving a weight to the most...

    The Grand Tour

Episode 2 I found disappointing.Still better than the revised Top Gear though.

    The Grand Tour

I thought by now we might have seen some comments about the Grand Tour on Amazon.I watched the first episode and thought it was a lot better than the most recent episodes of Top Gear.Anybody else seen it?

Setting planer knives - a minor victory

I would echo the praise for the Sedgwick,a really good and simple system. If you enjoy a challenge I recall an old Danckaert that needed a very long parallel punch and most of a morning to get right.I'd rather deal with a Wadkin PAR and that has sixteen knives to change, but mercifully a jig takes...

    Goodbye Leonard

We have lost a number of talented people this year but somehow this demise causes me a bit more sadness.A huge talent extinguished.

    First block plane advice

I recommend a slightly different approach to most of the fans of a particular brand.Have a look at a few car boot sales or on ebay and find a reasonably tidy plane;it is much better if it has an adjustable mouth and lateral adjuster. You may well need to grind and sharpen a used plane, but you...

    One for the Plane Makers

Just to clarify, the saw I used as a donor was a Mec-Brown cutoff saw.

    One for the Plane Makers

A good while ago I made a hollowing plane which used a cold cutting circular saw blade from a metal cutting saw for an iron.It works very well, but I suspect an untipped metal cutting blade is a good deal harder than a general purpose wood cutting sawblade.

What do you use your disc sander for?

I don't have a belt sander, but I do have a cute little eight inch disc sander.I use it for cleaning and trimming end grain and the tilting table can be very useful too.I would absolutely love a much bigger disc as it would be useful on much bigger workpieces-unfortunately I just don't have the...

    Cutting Tufnol

If its one of the phenolic/paper types you will probably be OK and at such minimal thickness I would imagine your biggest challenge will be finding a sufficiently fine saw.A false table would probably be a good idea when sawing to minimise chipping. If you have the dubious pleasure of machining...

    What wood is this?

Without knowing what the coating is,if any,its hard to be certain. Some of it looks like sapele.
