Should I expect Plywood To Be Flat ?

Define flat? You can get some very curly 6mm ply from some sources.A mild bend in 18mm shouldn't be a disaster but it may take a bit of pulling flat.If its laid flat and no part is more than an inch or so off the ground you can normally work with it.I wouldn't advise leaving it too long as...

    What am I doing wrong?

This seems a bit puzzling. If the scraper is soft enough for a file to dress the edge,I would have expected a burnisher to create a useful burr. The way I was taught to prepare a scraper was to file the edge by moving the file along and not across the surface and carefully holding it close to...

Cascamite - Good for bonding brass to hardwood?

Epoxy certainly works. If the current circumstances make it hard to get hold of, you may be able to do the job with one of the foaming polyurethane glues. They have worked for me once in a while when attaching aluminium extrusion to a ply carcase.

Why aren't 'dovetailed M/Ts' more popular?

Isn't the simpler answer to the original question the time that they take?In a commercial environment the cost of the time has to be passed on and in a hobby situation the cost is the time subtracted from our available productive hours in the workshop.I would suppose that were we in the position...

Which way to use a grindstone wheel for chisels?

I remember that back in the eighties a few excerpts of Ashley Iles autobiography appeared in the Woodworker. One issue focused on the work done by the grinders in the Sheffield cutlery industry and they didn't just grind bevels on one sort of implement, they did whatever came in the doors.He...

Which way to use a grindstone wheel for chisels?

Cutting edge pointing up.You may well get replies from people advocating grinding on the side of the wheel-ignore them unless you have a grinder and wheel intended to be used in this way.

I don't know what browser you use and my computer is running Linux so this might not work for you-it works for me though.Press the CTRL key and use the scroll wheel on the mouse to enlarge or reduce the size of the text.

    Learning dovetail joint

Looking at the gaps on the assembled dovetail and the fact that pencil lines are visible I would recommend using a sharper pencil to do the marking out.Your chances of success will improve if you have a really fine line in the right place.A scribed line is probably the thinnest you will get but...

    Learning dovetail joint

I find this whole discussion a bit peculiar. We had a poster announcing that he was trying to cut dovetail joints and he described his saw.Since then we have had all manner of suggestions and I don't think he has cut a single dovetail. The core issue is one of marking our a piece accurately and...

    Snapped a bandsaw blade

The biggest risk of the blade flying off the machine is not having the top guide as low as it should be.If you keep it close to the job the broken blade doesn't have the distance to allow it to move sideways very far and it stands a much better chance of being contained.

    Shaper Origin handheld cnc

I've seen it promoted online, just as I've seen the Maslow. Both seem to be neither fish nor fowl costing a good bit more than a simple hand held router and lacking some of the useful features of a decent CNC.All in all I think I would rather have a small CNC with which to make jigs to use with a...

Any recommendations/tips/views for CAD/3D modelling software

Back in the mists of time, say 15 years ago,I downloaded the excellent Progecad. An almost exact clone of Autocad LT with the same interface and file types. It got "improved" and I drifted away from using it.I then had several years of using Rhino 3D professionally and it's associated CAM package...

Cutting a Slot in the edge of a board

To be clear, I was advising the use of a bearing guided slotting cutter rather than using a slim cutter and a fence while working on the edge.

Cutting a Slot in the edge of a board

Not the easiest of jobs to do from an edge. Not only do you have to take care that the gap in the fence doesn't cause a wobble, you have to remain square on a narrow edge and cut a depth of a few multiples of the diameter. Its a good deal easier to use a slotting cutter from a router running on...

Now its officially a pandemic it seems the middle syllable is superfluous.

    Veneering question.

That project poses several challenges.First you have to be sure the coating has been removed to the extent that successfully gluing veneer will be feasible. The location by a strong source of heat isn't exactly ideal either.Resawing to produce veneer can be a great way to produce something a lot...

    Smelly Wood

Back in the eighties a local supplier carried a stock of 10X5 sheets of 9mm ply made of a Brazilian wood whose name I have forgotten. It looked a lot like gaboon and smelt as though it had been marinated in cat pee.

    Making your own cabinet scrappers.

I remember the original items that this thread relates to were discussed at length a long time ago.The simple answer is to buy a set of curved scrapers and get on with the job. This sort of set crops up online from time to time and is a useful start. Maybe not perfect for the curve in question...

Cabinet Scraper Burnisher - Which of the three?

I don't see any need for these gadgets. The back of a gouge was the traditional implement and corners of chisels or screwdriver stems work too.If you have any of these you can get the scraper sharp and put the cost of the gadget to something else.Maybe a decent single cut file for dressing the...
