    Chamfers for moulding planes

Practice. The man at Marples had presumably made a lot of planes.I'm a little surprised that somebody is actually making moulding planes these days.An interesting hobby and a way to keep the skills alive.

    Late in life career shift

A lot depends on the individual's financial circumstances. If you need a particular level of income to maintain a lifestyle,a late starter might struggle to make stuff fast enough to achieve a decent lifestyle. The satisfaction of creation might also be diluted when you find it necessary to make...

Very good, cheap and effective task lighting - Ikea

When I needed to see what was happening in a deep (by my standards) recess on the lathe,I bought one of these and screwed it to a block of wood.Very happy with the result. Luceco LED IP65 Slimline Guardian Floodlight 8W 600lm | Toolstation

Gosh. Things have changed since I last did "proper woodwork".

I had reliable information that about 12 years ago an A8 headlight replacement was quoted at £2600.Not sure if the VAT was included in that figure. The point about carrying spares is well made.Given that the EU managed to get phone charging plugs standardised,is there any reason why they...

    Thicknessing small pieces of wood

A couple of things in this thread concern me.In the first post our enquirer mentions having no idea how short a piece can be fed through the machine.I would suggest he reflects for a moment on quite how the piece will be propelled through the machine when it is beyond the point of contact with...

    Router woes

That would be my first check too.I have used a 6mm shank in a 1/4" collet several times with no problems,so I wouldn't expect problems from that source.

    Plane - Sole Contact Points

Its amazing that we ever managed to make anything before the days of internet gurus.I have better things to do than watching tools being sharpened but I suppose the old saw about the one eyed man being king in the land of the blind might apply.

    Vintage sharpening

If you read Ashley Iles book on toolmaking in Sheffield, there is a section devoted to the individual trades and one described is grinding. As the men were earning based on piecework they had every reason to speed things up and they are described as running stones at twice the recommended...

Charnwood 619, can't square cut on left of blade!

I think you ought to be looking at the rails for the sliding table.I don't know the machine, but they all follow the same principles and it is absolutely essential that the rails are parallel to the saw.Having this correct comes before setting the crosscut fence square. I'm also a bit concerned...

    Plane - Sole Contact Points

A few years ago,the BBC broadcast a programme about the making of a samurai sword and it was fascinating. One of the latter stages was sharpening the thing-it took 8 weeks. Anybody trying the same thing on the scale of a plane would find their business unprofitable or if employed, would have the...

    What hardware do I need?

If the panels are thick enough,Soss hinges would meet the requirements. They are fairly demanding in terms of locating the recesses accurately.

    Mini CNC machine

That has come a long way from the selection of parts that arrived! One common feature of the entry level machines seems to be that insufficient consideration is given to the racking strains across the gantry.they mostly have similar steppers on the X and Y axes and while the gantry side plates...

    Plane - Sole Contact Points

It will inevitably be diminishing returns.I would like to be wrong, but I sincerely hope you didn't leave the iron in it's cutting position while doing the flattening.Because it now needs sharpening.Having done that, can you report back on how it is performing?

Best handsaw to cut 30-40cm diameter wet log? Bow saw?

It might work.I have never seen the result of anybody trying to set the teeth of a hardpoint saw,and would seek assurance before even trying such a thing.

Best handsaw to cut 30-40cm diameter wet log? Bow saw?

Unless the piece is light enough to turn over,a bowsaw will be of little use.The frame will bottom out before you get very deep. The best bet is to find an old style crosscut and find a friend to stand at the other side. This wouldn't be my preferred tooth form but there aren't too many good...

    Bandsaw dust extraction

I've never used a Kity and that said I expect it has the same inherent problem as any other bandsaw. There are many other routes for air to reach an extractor and no particular reason for the dust laden air to get any kind of priority. It gets a bit more complicated because of the tilting table...

An introduction to the Overhead Router

If this kind of information gets out,I can see the prices of used machines going up quite soon! Nice work ScottyT. I had thought that the widespread adoption of CNC routers had pretty much sent the good old overheads the way of pump screwdrivers.

    Sinking mortises in moulding planes

I made a curved plane for rebates, a lot like the example in post #4,years ago.I used a pillar drill for the start of the slot and cleaned up the cut with a chisel or two.A long series drill bit was helpful and the chisel was as flat as we thought necessary in those days. ;-)

An introduction to the Overhead Router

Really useful machines, once you understand their potential.I've used four of them at various times, from one like the Wadkin shown down to a tiny Zimmermann with a rotary table and a tilting head. With a home made fence, notched for relief around the cutter, they can produce mouldings too.The sign...

    Creating custom sanding blocks

It will be a miserable task however you go bout it.I have rubbed down quite a few small surfaces that needed to be flat and even made sanding blocks of a size to suit.I used thicker material than you tried and used spray contact glue to attach the paper.which meant a lot of blocks,so I began...
