    British Woodworking - Frugal woodworking.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to discriminate against girls in any way, but if you talk to educators they'll say that one of the really big problems these days is motivating and connecting with young men. With so much focus on communication technologies, and the gradual decline of making...

Thanks, Steve. I'd be interested to know how people think we might be able to help getting more young people woodworking. Already we've had some fantastic feedback from the issue, including one teacher who says that Jim Hooker's comments about school woodwork were spot on. A schoolboy has...

    British Woodworking - Frugal woodworking.

Our distributor says that your newsagent should ask their wholesaler for British Woodworking. The wholesaler will then put in an order with our distributors, Warners. But if you have any problems do please contact me. Nick

I'm just getting the right number for your newsagent to call. We are a publishing house, but we have a distributor that sorts out supply to stores. When I have the details I'll post them here. Thanks Mike W for your support. You've summed up my position pretty accurately. Cheers Nick

We paid Smiths to get into a set number of stores for two issues. You hope that you perform well enough that after that they keep stocking you. But whatever happens, you get none of the money back. Of course, bigger publishing houses don't face quite the same challenges. That's one of the 'fun'...

Availability is all about supply and demand, I suppose. There are about 500 Smiths outlets in the UK. When we started, nearly two years ago, we were in only 100 of those because we inherited the stocking from Traditional Woodworking. We paid a lot of money to go in 200 branches last year, and...

I didn't mean to imply no money has come our way! It looks rather ungrateful as a quote on its own like that! What's your postcode? With that I can find you a local stockist. I like buying mags from newsagents too, so I know how you feel. Cheers Nick

Make up your mind, Rob. One minute you're saying he ought (in bold) to be paid, the next you're saying it's just 'nicer'. And 'my point of view' is still a point of view; it is still a comment, an observation, call it what you will. What other kind of point of view is there? Nick

Thanks, Frugal and Chisel. Tony, what have I done to deserve this sort of comment? I just don't get it. Undermining my relationship with contributors and potential contributors is pretty unhelpful. I cannot afford to pay people much, and other magazines may pay more, but most people who...

    British Woodworking magazine

Have we sent you a PayPal invoice yet, Mav? What most people probably don't realise, and I say this with caution, is that British Woodworking really is just me, with the help of some great contributors, producing a magazine in my home because I feel the market deserves the competition. I...

Thanks for that, Lataxe. I appreciate it. Cheers Nick

    Timber & Tools Auction

There is an auction of timber and tools at HJ Pugh in Ledbury, Glos tomorrow from 10.30am. There's viewing today from 2-4pm. I would love to be able to go, but can't. I'd like to do a feature in British Woodworking about buying wood at auction and buying secondhand tools. If anyone decides to...

    Action shots

I raised my Axminster lathe by about 4in, on bricks from an old storage heater. Cheers Nick

    The Walnut tree

That looks like gorgeous walnut. My favourite wood. Anything made for timber you've felled and processed yourself takes on a different meaning, I think. I'd love to see what you make of it. Cheers Nick

Merry Christmas and Thank You to Charley and the Mods!

And a Happy Christmas to one and all from me too. I've enjoyed getting to know more forum folk over the last 18 months, and I've been hugely impressed by the way the forum has been working. It performs an important service to woodworkers, and long may it last. Thanks for the support. I hope...

    Beginners buying wood guide

I suggest you try the Forest of Avon co-operative. They have members who use and/or supply local wood. Talk to Duncan Bonner on 0117 953 2141, [email protected]. They are a fantastic organisation, and have contacts with some great local sawmills. Cheers Nick

Axminster and Brimarc in the Warwickshire

I had one of those thicknessing jigs once. I'm not that fond of anything that incorporates a hand power planer. Noisy, dusty, scary things I've always thought, best left for cleaning up painted or abrasive surfaces.

Knock-down bed fasteners - what would you do?

Actually that seems to be what's been used on our bed, Dan. They do work very well, and are inconspicuous. The old method was fine, but these are better. Nick

Axminster and Brimarc in the Warwickshire

No, I was really thinking of 'jointer' (to use the American phrase). I'm not sure you can actually buy small, benchtop versions of these, and I think I'll be better off with the old Woodster p-t I've had for years, but stored when I got a larger model. Nick

    Damn it's cold! What heater?

Oil-filled rads always seem to come out tops in these discussions. In my main workshop I have a HotSpot woodburning stove, which is designed to burn shavings as well as offcuts. It is brilliant and gives off amazing heat quickly. Sometimes it even holds overnight, but insulating the concrete...
