Cressing temple show - a few pictures

I've been to many a woodworking show over the years, some of which I've organised myself. Cressing Temple was by far and a way the most enjoyable, and we sold more subs in a weekend than at any previous event. Huge congrats to Mike and the team at Classic Hand Tools. They have created...

Forgot to mention that I've put a few more details and quotes on my blog (nickgibbs.wordpress.com). Nick

    James Krenov

I'm sad to report that James Krenov has died, aged 89. Famous as a cabinetmaker, author and teacher, those of us who enjoy woodworking as a past-time and passion will mourn that passing of a man who famously declared himself "an amateur, and always will be. That's the way I want to die." Though...

Thanks, Damian. Good idea. But sadly I have to pack the car to go up to Woodfest Wales tomorrow morning at 4am! Happy weekend one and all. Nick

What? Have I missed something, or is this a joke? Just in case you didn't know, Rich (or do I know you and you're pulling my leg???), I edited Woodworker from 1987-1991, and launched Good Woodworking in 1992, then relaunched it in 2005. I'm not sure new editor is quite the description! And I'm...

Sorry not to respond earlier: I've been away for a couple of days. I thoroughly endorse what Andy King has to say, and trust his testing completely. I do think that star ratings can sometimes be as restricting to the tester as they are useful to the reader, but that aside I have every confidence...

Here at British Woodworking we try to test (we test products and review books, by the way) products that are interesting and new and hopefully good. We try not to test all the identical me-too products that come from similar factories because it's so hard to tell what you're going to get and...

    British woodworking

Thanks for keeping me up to date. It's about the only way I get to know if problems have been resolved. And if anyone has a problem with a subscription, do please email me directly or post a thread. We've enjoyed plenty of support from the Forum, so it's only fair that people know when we've...

    British woodworking

Sorry I haven't responded earlier to this. The latest issue was a few days late, mainly because I got it to the printers a couple of days late. Sorry about that. There has also been a problem with a small number of subscribers whose names and addresses arrived with the printers too late. If you...

    David Hockney's wood

There's an interesting story in today's Guardian (www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2009/ma ... sons-trees) about a wood the artist David Hockney has been painting. It's recently been cleared and the story in the paper is extremely one-sided, without any explanation why we need to manage forests...

    Dangerous pushstick

The pushstick was near the blade because the 2x1 was tending to lift at the back and so rather than just guide it from the side I had to use some downward pressure. As I mentioned, the 'mouth' of the pushstick is about 2in long, which means the pushing bit at the back of the notch is a long way...

    Dangerous pushstick

You're absolutely right. It was poor practice. I'm sure I realised that was the case, and perhaps wore the visor because of that. I can't recall. Had we had a bandsaw in the workshop (too complicated to explain why it isn't there at the moment) I would have used that. But hopefully it's a lesson...

    Dangerous pushstick

After 30-odd years working with machines I had my first really close shave with a tablesaw yesterday. I was feeding a piece of 2x1in softwood through the blade, cutting at a slight angle along its length and following a line. I was using two pushsticks, and one caught the back edge of the blade...

Anyone going to Glasgow show FRIDAY 13th??

I was in beautiful Scotland last weekend, and it was lovely! I fulfilled a strange lifetime's ambition of crossing the Kincardine Bridge. I've seen signs for it so many times but never crossed! I don't know the parking prices. Sorry. Try SK Promotions. Cheers Nick

    Splintered history

I've just come across the most fantastic book I recommend to everyone: The Splintered History of Wood by Spike Carlsen. You can find more details on my blog: nickgibbs.wordpress.com. Cheers Nick
