    Table Saw Bearings

The retainer plates look pretty basic but I guess Scheppach employed an engineer to design the thing and they have done 20 years. Going by Clogs post he has done a lot more bearings than I have so I would go with what he says. I had heard of of a locktite product but have never had to use it as...

    Table Saw Bearings

I would get the same sealed bearings. NSK are good ones and will be fine. If they came out of the frame easily then perhaps they are a bit loose in the holes. A tight fit is the usual. I am not familiar with that saw so can you do some pics of the retaining plates and the way they are secured...

    What timber is this?

Rough sawn is about the only answer I can give with just that picture to work from. Regards John

    What hammer for chisels?

Those handles are designed to use a steel hammer on and if you used a wood mallet it would wreck the mallet. Nice wood handled chisels do need a wood or plastic mallet but its ok to use a claw hammer with those. That's why it's got a metal cap. Regards John

    Recommend plastic handled chisel.

Could be that looking at the ugly plastic handles is bringing on the gag reflex. :) A more science based explanation is the plastic has had a chemical reaction to something. Perhaps a solvent or something. Regards John

Honing bevel on a chisel with hollow grind

Depending how you sharpen it could be a bit like playing stairway. The first bit, the next bit and the bit after that. Dont know what they were on but too complex for rock n roll. Regards John

    Cherry cracking

As said above leaving the pith in is the biggest mistake for any timber as thats where cracks usually start. Fruit woods are more prone than most for cracking and there is never a guarantee even if you do everything right but with the pith in they nearly always crack. Most turners would have...

Bowed long boards - any remedy?

Going back a few years I made a few wood archery bows. That was a figure quoted by a lot of bow makers so I took it as a working guide. Not something I ever measured. I also think they were talking about loaded to destruction not safe working load. (get a fair bit of destruction making bows)...

Restoring Stanley No3 - advice please.

You have a job on your hands there. Looks like its been out in the weather at one time or submerged. The handle repair would best be done by trimming the broken ends and sandwich a slice of wood in there then trim up. As for the rod looks like its more rust than metal so a replacement may be the...

Bowed long boards - any remedy?

As said above, to support weight depth of section is more important than width. Double the width and you double the load bearing but double the depth and its 8 times the load. I also favor a center leg in the middle rail as you can then use a much lighter rail. One center leg still allows...

Bowed long boards - any remedy?

For the long side rails i dont think its a problem. If you can push the bends together by hand on the benchtop it should go in the bed frame OK. Place the bends towards the center of the bed and the support slats will push them into line. Like that. )-(. Anything that pulls into line with...

    My waterfall river tables

I am not a real fan of river tables but you have gone the extra mile with those. The bent bark edges are a step above the rest. I could just about get along with the one in the first picture. Regards John

How long do disposable thickness planers last in hardwood

Dirt and old paint is hard on blades so any old wood I use first gets a clean up with an electric hand plane. The tungsten blades for these are quite cheap compared to thicknesser blades so I clean back to bare wood with that first then it can go in the thicknesser. Regards John

    What Wood is This

Its about the right density for redgum and I reckon it looks like it too. As for what to make I would think there is enough in that picture for a small coffee table or something. It polishes up quite nice but you can sometimes come on voids and gum veins. This should give some idea of the look...

Got a hundred+ new pets to feed

Second childhood and giving the wildlife some help too. Nothing wrong with that. The planet needs all the help it can get. Tadpole collecting was something most of us did as kids. Our school had a fish tank set up and every year we would bring some spawn. Then we would observe the growth and...
