    Tail centre - how tight?

As terry says lowest speed until the things come into balance. Tailstock pressure needs to be firm but you dont need to sweat it up. As well as wrecking the live centre it will not be kind to the headstock bearings either. Vibration is a guide as to if you are on too high a speed and sometimes...

What paint for pressure treated timber?

It can be painted like other wood but let it weather a bit first. Some treated wood can come still wet from the treatment process. A few months should do it. Then clean, prime and paint. Regards John

    PVA or CA

Not sure it will help now but some CA drizzled into the cracks may slow it down. It wont harm if you look at it that way. Wet rough turning does have a degree of failure and I have had some large bowls that ended up small platters and some just firewood. Some woods like the fruit woods are bad...

What wood is this and how best to finish

I can not recommend a particular brand as I dont live in the UK so have not used any of them. My point was to use an oil based outdoor furniture oil as they are the easiest to maintain. If you go for a varnish its a lot more work when it comes time to redo it. The oil finishes suit most woods...

    DIY lathe

I have done some very rough brass turning on a wood lathe. Using hand held tools will only give rough results with metal. A cross slide arrangement holding the tool like Kittyhawk has shown will get better results and be more accurate. I think If I was going to build one I would use a power...

Best planer thicknesser for cupped, warped boards

I would not put boards through a planer/thicknesser after they have been sanded. Just adding more grit to the mix. THE best tool to clean up old dirty wood is an electric hand plane. They have tungston blades that are quite cheap. When you get back to clean wood then you can take it to the...

In praise of the split top bench

My current bench is a split top and like you I think its very versatile. I have had a couple of Nicholson like benches before this one but am finding I like the split top better for my style of working. 10 years on this one and still liking it. Regards John

    Laminating 25mm stock

    Laminating 25mm stock

Yes have had benches with and without the well. First impression says its great to have a place for the tools but unless you are more disciplined than me it becomes the resting place for half the workshop. I find its easier to work without a well. Regards John

Extracting Rusted Furniture Bolts From Outdoor Furniture

Plug cutters work for short screws but you can make a longer one from steel tube by just filing teeth in the end of it. Remove Damaged Headless Screws from Wood FAST - YouTube That will be the neatest fix. A less neat way is drill a hole alongside the broken screw then using a punch knock the...

Jet BAILEIGH DC-2100C Dust Collector Cyclone... anyone had one? used one? thoughts?

I would inquire to see if you can get the one with double 6'' inlets like AJB Temple got. Actually looking below in similar threads he has done a review on his machine. Regards John

Jet BAILEIGH DC-2100C Dust Collector Cyclone... anyone had one? used one? thoughts?

A machine that size would work better if they had stuck with a single large inlet. The 3 small inlets will reduce the efficiency a lot. These days the experts are saying a 6'' suction pipe is required to ensure the small harmful particles are collected. Seems strange that a machine with the...

    Do I need a No03 hand plane ?

Never set out to get a #3 but when one came my way I got to like it. Sure it wont do all a low angle block can do but it's got a handle and I like that. My block planes get less use since I got the #3. Regards John

    Recommendations for Mortise Chisels

I would have liked to build a set of vintage pig stickers but you usually only find them sold as singles and it would take years to collect a set so I went with the Narex set. Good value and the work OK even on Australian hard woods. Regards John
