    Cleaning rust off thicknesser bed

Been cleaning my cast surfaces with WD40 for many years and never had a problem. Thing is you dont just squirt it about and leave it. You clean it off then wax the surface. I have to admit however I have never read the ingredients list of WD40 Regards John

    Best VALUE router table.

Having the router in the extention wing of the table saw is a great space saver and gives you a huge table to work on. I made a fence with dust extraction port and that clamps to the saw fence.

    R. E.Ward bandsaw

200 quid wont get you a lot of bandsaw today. While that is a well built saw and looks in good condition you have to ask if it will suit your needs. What will you be wanting to do with it. Funny thing looking at the pics I cant see what limits the depth of cut to 4''. Have you spoken to the...

    UK alternative to pipe clamps?

I was going to suggest these that you attach to some wood. That's until I saw what they cost now. About 3 times what I paid for these 12 years ago. That said may still be an option if you need really long clamps. Got me through a bed build when I could not find any clamps long enough. Sash...

    R. E.Ward bandsaw

Looks quite old. I would say before the generic Tiwanese 14'' machines that came under so many brand names. 4" depth of cut would be limiting but Its likely a well made machine. Back then the point of having a bandsaw was more for cutting shapes than serious resawing. Stug, Fences were...

End Grain Hollowing, should I consider a Carbide tool?

As you are finding there is only so far you can extend a tool and still be in control. Bigger heavier tools get you a little bit further. Deep hollowing systems usually have a captured tool method to take the leavering forces. They can also be very expensive. Jump on youtube and look at some...

    Dovetail jig opinions

Going by how many want to unload dt jigs, hardly or never used, that may be telling you something. Not saying there is anything wrong with them and if you are going to be pumping out production line numbers of dovetailed items then you need one but most of us back yard woodies likely only do a...

    English Workbench

As jvc26 says first coat thinned down a bit with turps. I brush on the first coat. Let it soak in about 15mins or so then wipe it off with a rag or paper towel as dry as you can. After an hour or so give it a second coat full strength, wiped on then after 15mins or so wipe off again. Should be...

    English Workbench

Looking good. Boiled linseed oil was the traditional finish for those benches. Quicker to get a few coats on. Easy to touch up later and the working surface will be less slippery than a DO surface. Regards John

    laminating help

Never laminated on that scale. Only Archery bows. Looking at the layout I think you will have trouble doing both side by side. Wet epoxy and wood strips will want to slide around like oiled snakes. You will also need twice the clamping force. Way I see it if both are done on the same form they...

    Corded Or Cordless

In total agreement. Battery tools have come a long way and perform as well as corded tools these days but the letdown is always the battery. So where its convenient to plug in I do. Regards John

Any one made a sharpening jig for this or similar machine

As Phil pointed out above turning gouges are different to sharpen than bench tools. For gouges right off the belt is OK. Heating the tool is avoided by dunking in water every so often as you go. Dont ware gloves so you can feel things getting warm. Same goes on a grinder also. HSS tools will...

Any one made a sharpening jig for this or similar machine

My fault should have taken in the original question better. I had in my mind how I used to do chisels and plane irons on a belt. Regards John

    Hardpoint saws vs resharpenable

I would say if you cant sharpen a saw then get the disposable. It will rip after a fashion and cross cut not too bad. Better than getting nowhere with a blunt saw. It gives you something to work with. That said while you are at it find an old rip saw and a file and have a go at learning to...

Faux-Roubo bench build - quick question

Square dogs are the ultimate aim but round dogs are a whole lot easier to do and can be done after the bench is made. I kept all my dog holes 3/4'' as that what suits my holdfasts. I dare say some will argue for square but we all work in our own way. I just make my own wood dogs as they cost...

Faux-Roubo bench build - quick question

I guess since you have the vice hardware then thick top it is. If the holdfasts dont hold then you can counterbore a larger hole part way up from below. I am not sold on just screwing the top boards together. Holdfasts will apply a leaverage (as will the end vice)every time they are used and...

Any one made a sharpening jig for this or similar machine

It will do to make the primary bevel if you make up some kind of jig to hold the tool at the correct angle. Then hone the secondary bevel on a stone. Word of warning if you also use the sander for wood its not safe as sparks and wood dust can spoil your day. Years back I used a linisher type...

Faux-Roubo bench build - quick question

Sounds a bit like what I did but I read a few bits about making a bench build as easy as possible. 125mm seems like a waste of wood as 100mm thick is more than enough. In fact mine is only a bit over 70mm pine. By the way pine is good enough for a bench top and you dont need to look for...
