    WDS Moxon vice hardware

Yes the more horizontal slot at the front the better. I took the simple approach to a moxon. I had seen the benchcrafted hardware but really could not justify the cost. A couple of years ago a local tool company put out a hardware set at about half the price and I was seriously thinking about...

    WDS Moxon vice hardware

You have almost as many smoothers as I have. I blame woodwork forums for my plane collecting disorder. Think I may be over it now as its been a few years since I last bought one. Before I got on forums I had a stanley 4 and a 5 plus a cheap block plane. I actually got by with that for years...

    WDS Moxon vice hardware

I have a cast iron body one the same size as a No3. Picked it up for a few dollars as it looked a bit different. I set out to find out about GTL but most of the replies reckoned they were rubbish so it sat in a dark corner for years. I eventually got to cleaning it up and found it was not all...

    WDS Moxon vice hardware

A moxon is a very handy thing to have especially as you get older. My back thanks me every tine I use mine. Is that a GTL plane I see in a couple of the pics? Regards John

Juuma Vs Lie Nielsen Rebate (Rabbet) Block Planes?

I have had a try at that but my technique was a bit lacking. Rebate was a wee bit rough. Guess I still need the training wheels. I had been looking for a good wooden moving fillister for ages but they either cost a fortune or are just about knackered. Was a half hour job to stick a fence on a...

Juuma Vs Lie Nielsen Rebate (Rabbet) Block Planes?

The 78 either 1 or 2 arm versions is a very handy plane to have but hold off unless its got all its parts. There are a lot out there with bits missing. Some of the old wooden bodied rebates are also good and worth keeping a lookout for a good one. I converted an old skew woodie rebate by making...

Juuma Vs Lie Nielsen Rebate (Rabbet) Block Planes?

I am sure that with a bit of a fettle and a sharpen the Juuma would take a skim off a tenon if thats what it's wanted for and at 72 euros not 265. That said there are like Jacob pointed out other tools that can be used to do that. I have used a chisel, a 78, a shoulder plane and my current...

    Knack for plane blade setting?

I start with the blade wound back so the first swipe takes nothing then advance, swipe, advance, swipe until it takes the required thickness shaving. Like Hornbeam I use the edge of a board and taking a swipe both sides of the blade I can adjust the lateral leaver to get it central/even thickness...

I bought some fun from Japan recently...

When you say used in footwear, is it for wood or leather? Regards John

Juuma Vs Lie Nielsen Rebate (Rabbet) Block Planes?

Patents and copying aside I dont see what the attraction to rebate block planes is about. A rebate plane would likely do a better rebate. One with a skew blade would be best but even a Stanley 78 would be an easier option. Regards John

    Flooring

I understand your concern about the climatic conditions. I can only comment on what I have seen done over here. Regards John

    Oak splitting

Are you hollowing out the end grain? That usually is more prone to splitting than done the other way. Regards John

    Flooring

That looks like a parquetry floor you are doing so I had the wrong end of the stick. Please disregard my last post. No reason that will not work. My brother had it done about 30 years ago by professional layers. The blocks were left in the room for 6 weeks or so to acclimatize before being laid...

    Bulk buying bowl blanks

You may have a point, we are blessed with trees in my location. Not so much fun when they catch fire however. Anyhow my point was to get looking around as just about any bit of tree branch can be turned. It's a real shame what gets put through the shredder. I did notice on my last few visits to...

    Record power lathe

I started out with that model lathe and also the book Phil Pasco pointed out. A good starters combo. Its a decent enough small lathe but you will need to get a spur drive for the headstock in No1 morse taper and a live center also in No1 morse to allow between center spindle turning. A face...

    Bulk buying bowl blanks

I soon learned that if you are going to turn then you have to learn to sniff out free wood or at least cheap wood. I have at times bought blanks but that gets costly real fast. Tree surgeons would be my first place to look. Gardens are a great source of sometimes really nice wood and if someone...

Eclipse No. 7 CP - Coping with more tension.

Quite like that and may give it a try. I have an Eclipse coping saw and would be happier if I could put more tension on it. I did make a small frame saw and while I can tension that up as much as I like I need to use a small spanner to rotate the blade. I could not come up with a method of using...

    Medieval crossbow replica

Tiller on that is looking quite good. I dare say it will take a bit of set over time but no reason not to make another as a spare. Any progress with the stock? Regards John

    Workbench from thicker slabs

I cant see how it will not work other than the top boards moving. If you keep the boards in your workshop for a while and they dont move then its likely good to proceed. That said it's a lot of good wood that could be put to better use. Pine will make a perfectly good bench. Regards John

Looking for turning profile templates for sale

I have found the hardest thing in turning is to make 2 things exactly the same. Even with a template its still just almost there. Without a template its way out. My first couple of salt and pepper grinders pointed me in the direction of templates. I told people you have to be able to tell them...
