How do I treat a kids workbench that will be kept outside?

I would be inclined to use a microporous paint. I painted my new workshop with it seven years ago and it still looks good with no maintenance. It has the consistency of emulsion paint, two coats and your done. There are quite a few manufacturers out there including Dulux, Johnstone's and...

    Clock case repair, bowed back

Is it something like this one below? If so I think Profchris has the easy answer.

    Clock case repair, bowed back

First off Richard, it looks very much like a walnut case to me with the back being solid walnut, In thirty five years of restoring I can't think of a long case that has not had either an oak or pine back. Also the inside of the back has been varnished or polished in some way (another thing i...

    Clock case repair, bowed back

I would have thought taking the back off and straightening it will be the way to go. As John said some photos will help... of the inside as well as the back.

What diamond stone; and what do the codes stand for?

I don't know about the other makes but I have two DMT stones one coarse and one fine, they are now about twenty five years old and still work perfectly. Is that a good enough recommendation!

    The Repair Shop

I have watched a few of these programs and I must say I am very disappointed with the BBC putting out such a poor quality example of woodworking. All of the individual craftspeople restoring clocks glass teddybears etc seem to be experts doing very good quality work but William Kirk gives a very...

Tapered plugs - glue or not?

I would always glue especially on a piece of garden furniture and with a tapered plug you should not get a visible glue ring.

    I’m in over my head

If the table top has had olive oil sat on it for a long time it is likely it has soaked in fairly deep especially with Ercol as I'm assuming it is an Elm top. The best, cheapest and easiest way to remove the oil is to use Fullers earth. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fullers-Eart ... aEZlO8tHKQ ...

New Laws vs Mail Order Tools

just received this email from the Home Office which clarifies the situation a little more. Dear Paul Davis, The Government has responded to the petition you signed – “Remove article 15 of the Offensive Weapons Bill (HC Bill 232)”. Government responded: The Bill prevents knives which cause...

    Jewellery/Keepsake boxes

I would not use felt, it makes a box look cheap. 100% wool baize looks very good comes in a wide variety of colours and is easy to use. Beware sellers on ebay, they will call felt baize so if you source it from their make sure you are getting the right stuff. Velvet adds a touch of class to a...

What should i do with this spare hardwood beam?

Why not sell it to your local reclamation yard? At least it would then stand a chance of being used to restore an old cottage. Just a thought.

    Best Planer Thicknesser Under £2000

I'm that 'chap' and I have to say I am so impressed with the AT129PT with the spiral cutter block. It is quieter than my chip extractor and leaves an incredibly smooth finish. Last week I planed down a Mahogany leaf from a card table veneered with Rio Rosewood. I was able to plane it down to 2mm...

    Awkward clamping problem

Coley, is that part of a large door hinge you are using to stop the clamp from sliding? What a good idea.

    Trimming underside of a door

I once saw a chippie on site use a biscuit jointer to trim the bottom of a door without removing it, going in from both sides and finishing off with a hand saw on the hinged side, from memory I think it took him less than 15 minutes!

    Hobbyist woodwork need help!

Hi Callum. Pughs in Ledbury have timber and tool sales from time to time, the timber is very good value providing you can transport it yourself. They have just had a sale ( I got three boards of elm for £50 ) so the next one will not be for at least a few months but if you sign up on their...
