Why do I keep doing this to myself....

Hello, OK, I take your point about the prices of these sheds being exorbitant. However, I can't agree that the quality of the timber they sell is somehow different to builders merchants and can be blamed for jobs going wrong. It is almost the universal excuse now, either advice from others not...

Why do I keep doing this to myself....

Hello, I've noticed a lot of blame being dealt towards the ' big shed' suppliers and it makes me wonder why. Why is B and Q the culprit here? Does the pine they use come from Mars? Does the timber from Travis Perkins, Jewsons, Huws Gray, Beers, et al, originate from virgin forests of old growth...

Hello, Aw, you could have lifted that little slab onto the surface planer, you are just being lazy! Mike.

    Router bit for planing/surfacing

Hello, It is one of the ways to get things such as massive live edged boards flat. Imagine trying to haul a 3 inch thick by 8 ft long by 36 inch wide slab across a surface planer, even if you had one that wide! It is tedious, but reduces the amount of handplaning. Mike.

contemporary horizontal boarded solid oak front door

Hello Oh, I see, misread the percentage as a rise in moisture content, not a change in width. However, the point is still that all those boards will have an enormous swing of seasonal expansion and contraction, and should not be entertained a a way of making a door. TBH, I seldom work out...

contemporary horizontal boarded solid oak front door

Hello, You could look at it like that, but you should understand, breadboard ends help keep the board it crosses flat. It absolutely will not prevent seasonal movement and therefore that must be taken into account when fitting BB ends to a wide board. In other words, it cannot be glued for most...

contemporary horizontal boarded solid oak front door

Hello, They don't exist as solid, meaning single timber boards throughout. The ones you can buy are engineered wood. Why don't they buy one of those? Trying to emulate what is an industrial process for a one off is going to be expensive, trying to get the same result without emulating the...

Which Router Bit set to get around £20-£30?

Hello, The clearance Wealden set are the same quality as the professional Wealden line, the Trend ones are not, though good enough for a starter set. I think it is a bit churlish to look a gift horse in the mouth, because of some idea that the standard stock are overpriced because the...

Glue and mortice and tenon joints.

Hello, Err, in a three page article one page and some overspill onto another was about proper application of glue, the tolerance of fit in the joints and what happens when the gap was increased. The rest was about optimising tenon strength by making the joint thicker, wider and longer and what...

Glue and mortice and tenon joints.

Hello, The reason I quoted the article was because the test were carried out by a research laboratory specifically set up for investigating the properties of wood. The tests did not tell me anything I did not know, but I thought an example of rigourous lab testing would back up what I and many...

Glue and mortice and tenon joints.

Hello, The article was not about how the joint should be produced, but about what was the permissable tolerance on the joint. The tester used a slot morticer to allow consistency throughout the test and a thickness sanded produce measurable tenon thickness. It is not his joinery method that was...

Glue and mortice and tenon joints.

Hello, Recently there was a discussion about the strength of glue and joints in wood. I have just read an article in Fine Woodworking which confirms what I already know, and might just help some who are unsure of how best to prepare joints and how to glue them for maximum strength. The findings...

What did you do in your workshop today ?

Hello, Thanks for all the kind words, everyone. Yes, I did turn it, but it might be deeper than you think. I was thinking of storage possibilities and thought a bracelet or bangle etc. might go well in a bowl. The bowl made sense being square, to rest on the lower dividers and fit with the...

Hello, Trimming and flush planing the splines. Thankfully, no gaps. Mark D note the Japanese backsaw I am using. I don't know what saw you are using with the dovetail guide, but Dozuki tend to be cross cut. The one in the photo is a ripsaw, I believe a more correctly called a Hosabiki. I use...

What did you do in your workshop today ?

Hello, The photo I should have posted earlier. Clamping the bandsawn cut spline to the bench and planing so the wood is in tension, to avoid buckling. It takes a bit of trial and error to get a good fit; it needs to be an easy slide fit without slop. A push fit is too tight, once the glue is...

Hello, Jewellery boxes are difficult. Just the price of quality locks and hinges are often enough to push the price above what many are prepared to pay for a box. Something small has a Lower perceived value than a large item, despite the quality of the work, though ironically, the amount spent...

What did you do in your workshop today ?

Hello, Thanks for that, but I'm trying to do it straight from my phone, the PC is miles away! I'd normally use a camara and reduce the number of pixels to get lower res, but I don't seem to be able to do it on this phone.....probably missing something. Mike.
