    Sharpening: 1000 vs 16000 grit.

Well, if it's not advertising the products they sell, it's courses they run.

    Sharpening: 1000 vs 16000 grit.

Wouldn't stropping (Autosol on MDF) achieve the same result as the 16,000 stone?

    Secrets of the castle

Bear in mind the programme is primarily entertainment for the general viewer. So they're not going to go into technical detail on every step of making something. Which would account for the amount of "human interest" elements* in lots of TV programmes coz they're trying to get people who don't...

    winter maintenance

If I acquire a nice but old rusty tool, after it's been cleaned up it stays indoors!

    How many chisels and gouges?

I just really like old chisels and gouges! And they don't take up a lot of space. I agree about the chisels, you only actually need a few, to use that is. But you can never have too many gouges (and carving tools)! I'm carving a violin scroll at the moment and it's nice to have the right sweep...

    How many chisels and gouges?

4 more gouges, total is 193 chisels and gouges (not including turning tools). I think that's the lot, for now!

Retractable marking knife (mount cutting knife)

Interesting that you have put your blade the other way in so that the screw doesn't get in the way at the business end. The catalogue pics all show the screw at the cutting end, and the tapered end of the "London pattern" handle suggest the same. But of course anyone can use it either way! I...

Retractable marking knife (mount cutting knife)

I've cleaned it with a rag and meths and turps, it doesn't look much different but it's nicer to hold in the hand. Good point. Main hasn't got any markings, but it's exactly like in the Norris catalogue, which is the same as the one metioned up thread. From looking at...

Retractable marking knife (mount cutting knife)

Norris calls it a mount cutter's knife, presumably as in the mount in picture framing. I've never sold any tool I've bought so far, this might be the first one, but it's a nice item, I might hang on to it. I need to give a very gentle clean first.

Retractable marking knife (mount cutting knife)

I've just found this what I think is a retractable marking knife i bought some time ago in a jot lot, then put it away in a box and forgot about it. Has anyone seen something similar?

    How many chisels and gouges?

I also have some I've bought new, 4 Marples splitproofs and 20 Lidls. Add that to this lot of 9 (not inc the one without handles), that makes a total of 189 chisels and gouges.

    How many chisels and gouges?

37 in this lot, not including duplicates, total so far is 154 chisels and gouges.

    How many chisels and gouges?

I've finally managed to take pictures of the rest. 19 in this lot, not including duplicates, total so far is 117 chisels and gouges.

    Planing a Cypress work top

I don't like power tools and avoid them if I can, so if I was doing it I'd use planes, a jack plane to take off thicker shavings then trying plane/jointer to level and smooth off. Then a cabinet scraper for final finishing if needed.

Fallkniven Ceramic - The Ultimate Sharpening Tool?

I asked about "ceramic" stones on the forum before, eg the Spyderco ones and it's apparently named after the binding material. But then man made stones in general are all "ceramic" as the abrasive and a binding material is fired together. So I guess "ceramic" refers to a much harder binder. As...

    traditional carpenters toolbox

Thanks for explaining. All I'm just trying to say is IMO the tool chest, as it is used now, ie not by workers to store tools at an employer's premises, is not a good way to keep tools. I would think self-contained, ie free standing, tool cabinets that you can mount on a wall would be in the...

    traditional carpenters toolbox

But the people now advocating and using the tool chest are not in that situation, so my points still apply to the tool chest as it's currently used.
