    Debt and money

One of the hand tool thread's got sidetracked onto discussing banks and how they create money from nothing. Here's a good series on the history and theory of debt: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05447pc I know there's this forum rule, no politics: But of course debt, money, banks etc...

    Lidl chisels

OK, back to Lidl chisels: I know Lidl in Northern Ireland are doing the chisels on 5 Nov http://www.lidl-ni.co.uk/en/Offers.htm?id=560 http://www.lidl-ni.co.uk/en/Offers.htm? ... l&id=30168 but does any one know when Lidl in the rest of the UK will have them?

    Lidl chisels

This is really going off topic, if the mods will allow discussion on banks creating money out of nothing (a very interesting subject), then it deserves its own thread!

    Huge eBay pricing variations

If your're talking the final price in an auction, they yes, people do get carried away, and also they don't really have a firm amount they would pay. Then there's variation of people bidding on any one particular auction, it could be that with one auction, several bidders are prepared to pay...

    mobile upgrade

http://www.howtogeek.com/192732/android ... sscomments USB mass storage has been scraped on Android, because Google don't want ordinary users* to have direct access to the phone's operating system and your files. The biggest problem is if your phone has a problem and you have lost files, you...

Pay as you go SIM only deals

There's 2 price plans with payg. The "full" price where the credits do not expire, although you would have make a call or send a text every few months otherwise they do expire. This is real payg, you only pay for what you use. The main companies charge a ridiculous price for this , 25 to 35p a...

    Lidl chisels

I've got a Lidl chisel in front of me, on the handle is "Powerfix Profil+" and "DIN 5139", On the blade is "Abraham Diederichs GmbH & Co.oHG", then their address in Wuppertal in Germany, then various numbers inc manufacturing date I think. Country of manufacture is not on the chisel nor the...

    mobile upgrade

I use a Samsung Galaxy S1 which got for free from someone when they got a Galaxy S2. I'll keep on using it until it stops working, the phone was top of the range when it first came out but now it feels a bit sluggish even compared with the S2, but it's good enough for me. I only use for photos...

    Rutlands - pricing and reviews?

I don't like pricing where the "normal" price is inflated and the "sale" price in nearer the real price.

    So much for so little

Low prices for old "junk" that most people would just throw out in the rubbish or even pay people to take them away (house clearance)? That's how it should be! It seems to me most people selling old tools but who are not dealers have acquired them for nothing. My guess the most common is...

Where to buy a paring chisel?

I'm glad I'm not the only one to think the same! To me they don't look like "proper" chisels, ie forged under a hand held hammer or a powered hammer, with a integral bolster or socket that go all the way around the chisel. And despite claims of being "hand crafted", I suspect they are made...

    Japanese puzzle box making

I looks like to me the boxes and the decorative veneers were made almost completely made with machines and power tools, the only hand tools used in the video were a plane to smooth off the sticks and for the final "shaving".

    The STANLEY MARPLES chisel.

The two parts are bad enough on their own: horrible plastic handle and yucky rusty blade, but to combine them and make something that is even worse is an achievement!

Is it normal for a straight edge to be doing this?

I think that means it's only flat only along one side (the working side, in this case quite narrow) but not along the tapered sides. I don't if they are made so that only one side is flat. They should follow a standard, ie BS or DIN, but I've only read eg "within 2 microns per metre" etc, but...

Road fuel - not so expensive?

Bottled water is the biggest con of all time! Of course what you're really paying for is the cost of transporting bottles of water around, which uses up fuel and labour. Instead of moving lumps of heavy objects around, wouldn't be easier to send water in a long pipe...

    Look what the postie brought....

Nice enough, but how much was it? I've got Record one for a few £, made a cardboard box for it but haven't even used it (the tool) yet!

My latest wooden plane build, WiP

I would have thought beech and figured maple are difficult to plane in different ways, (Euro) highly figured maple being softer but has bands of reversing grain across all its surfaces. Whereas beech is just a fairly hard wood. On my previous planes I didn't stain, I only used hard wax oil...

My latest wooden plane build, WiP

Thanks all. Yes, its an offcut from a violin back. But it's tricky to work with, I was careless planing it and got some tearouts. Something like beech or other hard and close grained wood would work well. I've stained it with tea and put on a few coats of boiled linseed oil, but needs some...
