Re-commissioning old planes, what's worth your time?

Depends on the price of the plane, I would think. I bought a 1960s Record 5 1/2 for £3 which was completely covered in rust, had to spend a couple of hours (I think, can't remember exactly) using sandpaper to remove. Luckily it was only thin surface rust on the body, no heavy pitting, but the...

    Wooden Compass Plane

I would think the metal sole means you don't need a backwards sloping "wear", Stanley planes and metal planes in general have a forward sloping wear!

    Another dating query (picture heavy)

An early Stanley with no patent dates on the body puts it roughly pre-1900, I think. http://www.hansbrunnertools.com/Stanley ... Planes.htm

Any ideas who made this drill?

That looks very similar to this one advertised in Woodworker 1936: Some previous discussions: manual-pillar-drill-doesn-t-go-up-and-down-t90707.html hand-operated-pillar-drills-t53554.html?hilit=flywheel%20drill&start=45

Infill plane makers of modern times.

How about the oddly named "Henley Optical Company"? I think the 70s would not be "modern times" as far as infill plane are concerned, I don't think "infill" was even used back then, it's not in Salaman's Dictionary of Woodworking Tools nor in the following article. From Woodworker Magazine...

Tempering in oven, gas or electric?

How does tempering in a domestic gas oven compare with a stand alone electric mini oven (Lidl)? I presume gas is cheaper than electricity, but the gas oven is a lot bigger, so I don't know how it will work out. Also the electric mini oven is £30 so that's an extra cost. The electric mini oven...

    Help with ebony

My bold. With really black ebony, it's really hard to see the grain. Straighter grained ebony is not much different to plane than other woods, IMO. I use a normal "crappy" 102 (5mm mouth and no cap iron) to plane a violin fingerboard without experiencing problems, of course I take thin...

    That Chinese Plane Factory...

I think this is the factory/firm's own website: http://www.qstools.com/index.asp Their long name is "Cixi City Qiangsheng Tools Co., Ltd" and they use the "Luban" brand name. Note it's "Qiangsheng" with an "i" as the second letter and not "u". I don't know how Workshop Heaven came up with...

    Ebay advice

My bold. You would need to read that very carefully to realise the seller is going to add VAT to the final price. I would be surprised if Ebay would allow VAT to be added to the final price. I agree. Here's the Ebay page on VAT: http://sellercentre.ebay.co.uk/charging ... s-you-sell?

Mathieson Coffin smoother with unusual rosewood sole

And the wavy lines on the sides of the ECE planes were done by cutting the v grooves at an angle, ie slightly not in line with the plane. edit: I've checked, ECE actually use square grooves/comb joints. So you get the same pattern on the front and sides. It's Ulmia who use v grooves and the...

Ebay Scam or not ???? Advice

Correct. The scam is when the buyer collects in person and pays by Paypal, then claims they never received the goods and gets a refund from Paypal. The seller cannot do anything because they do not have proof that they sent the goods, proof has to be a tracking number etc from Royal Mail/courier...

ITA (Initial Teaching Alphabet). Anyone else a victim?

Haha, nais won! ITA; what a crazy idea! When you have such a spelling system that is so irregular, you have to learn it word by word. Of course there's some patterns, it's not completely random, eg: ball, baby, bell, bat. anyone can see and hear that the letter "b" corresponds with a "bee"...

    It's about technique not kit.

I rarely look at adverts but manufacturers don't actually say "you don't have to develop any skills", instead they say "easier and faster" which means less skill. Eg: A dovetail sawing guide: http://www.leevalley.com/en/shopping/In ... px?p=59418 From another supplier who does say "less...
