    Garage roof quote

I re roofed my workshop last autumn. Big double garage. Asbestos roof & all the purlins were riddled with woodworm, It was so bad that i was worried even a moderate snowfall would cave it in, chasing leaks was usual every time we got heavy rain. Because i could not empty the workshop & poor...

    Gutter cleaning pole

I heard a tip a while back, Run a long piece of copper wire just below the ridge line stretched between two screw eyes. Apparently it has the effect of preventing moss growth on the roof as the copper salts wash down.

    Retirement

I just retired at 59, I was in a trade that was notoriously poorly paid (boatbuilding) for most of my career & didnt have a decent pension. The private pension i did start back in the 80's was crap & i cashed it in a year ago. I would have been better off buying tins of beer & having the...

Chisel gets dull whilst working up through the grits

I have never understood what the problem is with sharpening, First you need good tools with good steel, probably why most of my go to ones are over a hundred years old. Ordinary grey oil stone, i have collected about 7 over the years, I dont like red arkansas ones as i never seem to be able to...

    Steaming wood

75mm square is about 3" so its a big ask to steam if its square. Steaming always goes better if timber is steamed on the flat ie wider than its thick. Square stuff this large will likely need a compression strap on the outer side.

    Pink anti-theft tools

Long ago while off work with a busted arm i had my toolbox lock cropped at work (boatyard) & most of my tools disapeared. Nobody had seen anything which was strange but odd tools turned up here & there. My workmates were a bit sheepish & hadnt seen anything which i found rather off. Ten years...

    New hip anybody?

Re anasthetics, my wife had her first hip replacement under a general anasthetic, she does not take anasthetics well & was quite poorly for the following couple of days. Second time she had an epidural with sedation & her recovery time was far quicker. 5 years & three years on respectively her...

    New hip anybody?

Not me but my wife has had both hips replaced. The best advice she can give you is that the surgeon will give you a bunch of exercises to do before the operation. DO them religously as they will strengthen your muscles & increase muscle tone. This will increase recovery time post op by a huge...

Have you dug foundations for extension?

We had a big extension built on our house 18 years ago, southern essex , on a hill, clay. Because the house had been underpinned on a ring beam the new foundations had to tie into that, Trench was 1.3m deep 600w with piles 11m deep, 300mm void former underneath the beam & a fair amount of...

When i was at school in the 70's schools did tech drawing, woodwork & metalwork which taught kids the basics, many went on to do apprenticeships & C&G, I did this & went to tech college to do yacht & boatbuilding. I stayed in the boat trade for most of my career. Then i became a D&T technician...

Help requested. OLD Bosch SB 400-2 dismantling/service advice...

As above, the rear bearing has seized or partly so through lack of lubrication & the outer race has spun in its housing melting it. I had exactly the same thing happen to an ancient wolf power planer a few months back, it started making a shrieking noise & i found it before it had done much...

Buying and restoring old cross cut hand saws and two man saws (for firewood)

I have a big 6ft two man crosscut saw that my dad was given about 40 years ago It was old then. Its one of those things that just hangs on the wall in the way. But last year we had cause to use it building a boat jetty & sawing telegraph poles on the side of the creek. I cleaned half a century...

    Angle grinder wood sanding disc

I first came across the angle grinder used to shape wood & fibreglass back in the late 70's at Thames Marine's Canvey island boat factory, everyone had an air powered 115mm angle grinder with 36 or 40 grit fibre backed sanding discs. We didnt use flap wheels as they are better suited to grinding...
