    Bowed timber

You can straighten a board on the planer either round side up or down. I was taught round side up such that on the first pass you plane the ends of the board. However it depends upon the length of your planer table and your technique. If the planers in feed table is short say half the length...

    Shoulder Plane Question

I have the Clifton and think it is great. I do not use it in Chisel plane mode very often but I think it is a bit clunky and heavy as a chisel plane. It works but is uncomfortable to hold. I would not be without by 3110 though for shoulders and raised panels. I bought the Clifton 400...

    Condensation problems in workshop

Surely the problem is the melamine. It is the equivalent of covering the room in polythene. With plywood, osb or plasterboard the moisture can be absorbed and then released on warm days. whereas the moisture hits the colder impermeable melamine and condenses. Increasing the airflow might help...

The computers have taken over... official.

I had an old 350, sold it a few years ago and there was a bolt in the underside of the table that met the bolt in your photograph to form a stop so that your table will not tilt past horizontal. If the idea is that the bolt in your photo acts as a stop then there needs to be a corresponding...

    CMT Router cutters

Matthew, Yes that is a Hal Taylor design. I bought the templates and the original book. It took about 120 hours to make that one.

    CMT Router cutters

I produce that joint with Wealden cutters but they are half inch shank and I would not want to reduce that by much. I noticed Whiteside now advertise a set of Maloof joint cutters but I think being from USA they will be half inch as well.

    Steve Maskery DVD's

As good as Steve DVD's are, personally I would not recommend them for a novice (Sorry Steve). I see them more for someone who has the basics and wants to move up a gear or several. A novice is better spending limited resources buying good hand tools and learning how to use them. And Don't...

    machines for new workshop

Some excellent kit. One thing to consider with Felder/Hammer is to try and buy the tooling and tables etc when they have a sale on. For instance they will heavily discount some tables and spindle tooling. Also the saw blades are best bought when there is an offer. They often do a big...

    Height of your work surface.

The other factor in many workshops is the need to set the bench so that it does not foul (or in some instances lends support for) anything coming off the table saw or planer. If you need to be higher for detail work make a moxon or a mini bench that sits on top your bench.

    Hand Routers?

The Veritas router at £100 seems expensive, but when you look at the engineering development they have taken the hand router to a new level. When I was looking a good second hand stanley was £70 so I looked at the design improvements on the Veritas. The blade post allows the blade to be fitted...

    Spindle moulder for oak windows

If you are only making one set of windows for one barn conversion I would not buy the window system. Far better to buy a good rebate block, cutter block etc and sets of cutters to make the windows. The blocks will then be used for your kitchen and other things. I made a batch of 18 windows...

    Ceramic sharpening stones

I have a set of spyderco stones. I got them at Axi. They are good for sharpening and honing carving tools. I recently bought a Arkansas translucent which is also good for honing carving tools. The Pfiel one is probably better than the Dans.

How to work out losses in reducing HVLP extractors?

Short answer is it will not work. In theory you will have a sixth of your 320 litres per second or 50 litres per second but I doubt it will achieve 30 as you will be starving the fan of air. Could you use the vacuum for the mitre saw and the other unit with 100 flexi on larger machines?

    What spindle tooling

Wealden Adjustable groover rather than a wobble saw if you are looking to use it for cabinet making. The wobble saw is great and can be set very accurately but the finish is sometimes a bit utilitarian

Where did the knowledge about the capiron get lost?

Douglas I think that is a tad harsh on Tom and Chris. Tom had a young business to promote and Chris was doing his job as a journalist. It might be more accurate to blame the perception of the power of the WWW. If you assume all have equal access then you ask the question D_W and the OP asks...
