    Drum sander for surface planing?

What is wrong with a hand plane until you buy a planer. A good tuned hand plane will sort 5 ft board much quicker than you might think. Also if you have a lunch box thicknesser then the planing does not need to be to produce a finished edge just a reference face. You can then use the thicknesser...

Arched top door - what do you call this joint?

I recently made a door using this joint. It is easier than it looks and even easier if you have a copy of Ellis and make the sliding bevel described in that. You can cut the shoulder of the tenon on a table saw. The shoulder of the stile I cut by hand using a paring chisel. I am happy to...

    Chip / dust extraction recommendations - £1000

Does it have to be in doors with you or could you build it a little lean too outside? I have the JET DC1100a (outside) with 150 ducting which works very well

Used Felder or Hammer Combination machine

Custard, for very small pieces I prefer the RUWI system (home made) as it holds the wood well. I once cut a very small piece of moulding for a break front sideboard on the SCMS only it took flight and the nice miter gashed my thumb requiring two stitches. My own fault for lifting the blade...

Used Felder or Hammer Combination machine

Custard, it is a lot more efficient to have the SCMS I use mine all the time for cuts under 12" wide and only use the Felder for larger cross cutting and large angled work. The only downside is the blessed dust extraction on the SCMS.

2.8mm is accross the teeth so that is the correct size for your riving knife

Use a good quality dust mask such as 3M 7500

Need an Air Filtration System for my workshop

Do you need filtration or dust extraction from each power tool. There is no point inhaling the dust and then cleaning it. It is best to contain it at source

Clifton Bench Planes one piece cap iron - anyone tried it

I have a plane with the new one piece cap. My initial response was disappointment. But when I looked carefully at the new cap iron it does show some design development. This is not your stanley bent iron, nor a large lump of steel. What Clifton have done is created a lip on the front edge by...

    Tmber estimation

Matt, true. But that does not tell the OP how much extra he should allow, nor how he should go about calculating the allowance.

    Tmber estimation

David, you are very lucky if you can do that. Half the time I go with a plan it is frustrated because the timber yard does not have say 4x1 and only has 5x1 or 5.5x1. That is 30% waste straight away. You might find a hidden Knot, split or shake and waste another 20%. Then sometimes it just...

    Tmber estimation

At this stage there are a couple of issues to think about. Cubic meters is a meaningless dimension when working out what you need and is only relevant to the final price. From your list you could work out the most efficient cutting list for planks, BUT 1. What size planks does the wood yard...

    How much twist is acceptable?

Richard, I admit it was a Friday night guesstimate rather than a calculation but the amount is not the issue it is the fact that the hold down system has to allow significant lateral movement. A further factor is that wood seems to react differently to underfloor heating (constant warmth) than...

    How much twist is acceptable?

In your favour is a constant temperature and it has acclimatised. Against it is 14 inches of real wood. The problem is that across that 14" the movement could easily be 1/2". No amount of screws, glue or biscuits will stop it from moving if it decides to go. You need to design something that...

    How much twist is acceptable?

If you fix it with screws and biscuits, how will the 14 inch wide plank be free to move over the seasons?

Cutting Window Cill On The Table Saw.

You need to measure it as all depends on the precise type of crown guard and precise size of saw and riving knife. So tilt the blade. Set the fence to the size of cill you want. Measure from the fence to to the fixed part of the crown guard closest to the fence and from the bed to the lowest...

    Another bandsaw question!

When I bought my BS400 the dealer negotiated with Record for the same discount as at the show even though neither of us were at the show. So speak to a dealer and ask him to get you a show discount price and you will buy the weekend of the show. i think mine went through Monday morning after...

Another Way Of Making A Window Cill.

If you are looking at options and ideas look at the Wealden window system. Never used it myself but if you are starting from a clean slate it is worth looking at. In any event it will show you options for making in sections

    Basic Table Design

As much as making a little table would be fun. Given it will be decorated on a daily basis and they will grow out of it in a year or two I would buy something from mother are or ikea and save your wood for another project
