Hello from a grumpy old Yorkshire man

Hello and welcome, I’m accused of being Grumpy sometimes, and personally I see it as a positive character trait. Lots of roundy roundy woodworkers on here.

    Buying a second hand Sedgwick

Not to deride Sedgwick at all, I have two of their machines and would buy the same again, but I also have an SCM Minimax planer thicknesser which has been superb. Mine has a Tersa 3 knife block and the finish is probably good enough for most people as a finished surface. Just hope it can widen...

    Festool Saw Stop Table saw

Nothing to stop you making your own, this is one I made to replace a horrible 3 feet long thing that came with my Minimax combination mc. Slides in and out and works just fine.

    Simple finish.

Never heard of this, could you tell us a bit more please? Ordinary hand soap? How is it applied pls. Just did what I should have done first, looked it up lol. Interesting but as it says it needs reapplying every year it’s probably not for me.

    Renovating a Dining Table

Think you’ve done all that was needed there Derek, as said something cramped to the table but I thought possibly an apple corer and peeler, extremely popular at about that time. Read somewhere that the Americans had hundreds of different makes to choose from.

    How to fix this?

Once they start on a particular piece they do seem to return for more, so annoying, the only thing you can do is either keep the annoying dog out of there or as was said cover it with metal of some sort. I was called in once and did repairs ( perfectly) only for it to be ruined within a week. Ian

    Advice needed

I think the whole top is one piece too, don’t suppose there’s an Allen/grub screw which you get at underneath?

    Is this oak?

Came across Mango wood for the first time yesterday- coincidence. Carroty wood, it’s weak along the grain, easy to snap and like cheap quick grown Pine- imagine trying to chop through it for Dovetails.

    Is this oak?

First off, sorry I don’t know what it is but fairly sure it isn’t Oak, just the feel of it really, and the growth rings are too large compared to your thumb in the pic, the face of the board does look a bit like Oak but I bet it would be carroty to work. Ian
