    Fhiaba fridge

I'll accept that I am both Professional and Nerd (I don't have a problem with that) but more important 'frugal' - some would say 'tight-wad'! :) It so happens that I also enjoy cooking and seldom eat out. I used to fix my own cars, initially an Austin 7, then A35, Ford Prefect, Triumph Herald...

I'm sorry Terry, again you are mistaken. One thing in favour of Win 10 is the fact that even printers that are 10+ years old still 'find' suitable drivers. I'm using an old Brother laser printer that I've had since 2014, it came to me because the owner wanted 'a new one' because it was 5 years...

    Fhiaba fridge

I know little about car electronics - I've run my Honda Civic from new in 2007 with no issues of any kind, it just goes. As far as PC's are concerned, I've been building custom units for small to medium businesses since 1989 - biggest customer had 28 on their network, one had 18 in high street...

    Fhiaba fridge

I take exception to that (very incorrect) statement ! I have customers who are still using computers I built for them in 1998 and I had a call out to one that I didn't build but was supplied in 1992 (the customer had pulled the video cable out without realizing!) Laptops are a slightly...

How to clean up old wood.

Not laughing at all - more grimacing - that piece looks to me to be riddled with woodworm - I wouldn't want it anywhere near my work shop never mind house! BURN IT!

    More price increases

I need another slice of humble pie! - even though I did some research it wasn't enough :( I have now found a definitive source and of course you are correct. What is also interesting to discover is that the threshold turnover demanding VAT Registration is nearly 60% higher than it ought to...

    Coin

You obviously missed my reply #13... I do have both an opinion and knowledge - I used to collect and deal in coins and the second one I added was an 1895 Crown given me by my father (the 1st was a 1930 shilling bought off a 'mate') and I am also a registered silversmith - my first post was...

    Coin

My point was poorly made but essentially the coin has an intrinsic value purely from the amount of silver it contains but also has a value to a numismatist - though serious ones only want 'BU' or better specimens - by cleaning it you are likely to remove any premium a collector might pay.

    More price increases

Nearly correct - it was between July '74 & June '79 - I was having difficulty remembering there ever being a 25% rate but now I've done the research I ought to have done earlier :( !! (All my past comments are from memory) I recall that the STANDARD rate was never 25%, this was the 'Higher...

    More price increases

AFAIAA = As far as I am aware -- I had forgotten about the 'New Build' zero rate & didn't know about the residential conversion issue - I don't have contacts in the building trade :) Purchase Tax was eventually also charged on non luxury goods, I was involved because I ran a small...

If you do, you'll wipe out any value - just put it in a plastic bag.

    More price increases

I thought I already had ! The biggest difference between VAT & Purchase Tax - as far as Joe Public is concerned - is the fact that you were never told how much PT you paid, it was just included in the price - or not if the rate was zero (seldom). Incidentally, any manufacturer did claim back...

Apologies - I hadn't considered the 'scrap' value :( In UNC condition there would be 0.91oz total weight and the Ag content is 92.5% so about 0.84oz which is ~24g With the amount of wear there is I suspect that you might recover about 20g and at today's price of ~£605/kg that's about £12 but...

Face value was 5/- now 25p. In highest Brilliant Un-circulated condition ~£600 - yours is 'Fair' to 'Poor' ~ £5 - (that's not an offer :))

    More price increases

You obviously don't remember Purchase Tax and have no concept of a 'Sales Tax'. VAT simply replaced Purchase Tax and was/is vastly easier to manage -- I certainly wouldn't want to go back to Purchase Tax which was levied on the WHOLESALE price of the material but charged out depending upon the...

    SK100 Chuck equivalent.

That's a very bald & misleading statement ! The vast majority of metal working chucks are 3 jaw scroll type rather than 4 jaw independent - thought of course both exist. It's also misleading to state categorically that metal working chucks can't be used for woodworking - they most certainly...

    Confused about screws

Not quite - specifically the Supadriv rather than Pozidriv was to improve the 'accessability' - regarding alignment of driver and socket/recess - many others were/are ways to promote/circumvent proprietry design and yet others are based upon security issues.

Mach3 movement on CNC is driving me mad!

Certainly! - an increase of nearly 70% in DOC will definitely have an impact - the amount - 0.8mm might not seem very great but at the distances we are talking about it is massive. Regrettably I don't have the knowledge to give you the mathematical calculations but it is (to me) quite obvious...

Mach3 movement on CNC is driving me mad!

I'll agree there! - I also make gears, from Tufnol, Maple, Walnut etc., and use 1.5mm end mills and my roughing DOC is never greater than 1mm - more often 0.5 - 0.8 and feed rate 200 - 300mm / minute. The other factor which may also impact upon the situation is spindle speed but I can't see...
