    Holes

The dental lab type bits work well for that type of work. However, this is where the type of tool is also relevant. Dremel tools are okay but only spin to 18,000 rpm, micromotor is a better in that they spin up to 45 to 50,000 rpm, AirPowered dental style drills are ideal as they spin between...

Lathe: Bolt down or Rubber Feet

rather than bolt down, I’d suggest building some weight into the new stand. I’ve seen a stand that had a box for a knee height shelf that encased some heavy breeze blocks. Gave some real mass to the set up that helped massively + only lost 6” in under lathe storage space.

    Novice needs help

For that budget I’d be definitely looking s/h. Depending on what you want to turn, for all purpose hobby use id be looking at mechanical variable speed - axminster M900 or similar clone. (google picture of lathe, you'll see them by axminster perform / craft / white ranges / sip / Charnwood /...

    New lathe

For a lifetime lathe i’d be looking for cast-iron in your place. Especially as you may have some off centre balance issues as you turn pipes and the like. For me I’d be looking for a used Vicmarc 175 swivel head lathe (or bigger if budget will run to it) which are awesome. You are also will not...

    Spare hex screws for chuck

As Phil says, metal lathe is gold star but battery drill and file is plenty good enough.

Folks Has anyone bought / tried these threading jigs https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/294082250975 I know Simon Hope does a great one but that is more than twice the cost than I can’t really run to for occasional use. Thanks Simon

    Face Plate size guide

Couple of points. Nothing stopping you drilling more holes in the one you have - I did so now 8 holes in all mine. Also you can open up the holes you have to take a No.10 screw - nice deep thread so ace hold. Also a tip I got from Phil Irons - countersink both sides of the faceplate. On...

    Decorative option?

Harvey Meyer is one of the guys in the states who does the really great basket illusion pieces. He demonstrated at the last AWGB seminar and recommends the Feber Castell Pitt ink markers. they are available with everything from 1mm to brush tips and sold as artist quality / permanent ink pigments.

    Wood burning

This is a great tip - without such a sharp tip you can also use darker woods to burnish a contrasting band on paler timbers. I find something like Purple Heart works well, perhaps on maple or oak for example.

What unnecessary extra nice to have tool would you buy if you had £100 only.

Where to start (and some would bust the budget!) Threading jig (Simon hope tool looks ace but there is something similar but not quite as refined for £100) Thompson SRG (silly money but looks awesome!) fluting jig complete set of saburr 1/8” burrs Stuart Batty handle system / bolsters for rest...

    Tailstock locking Lever

The lock works as there is a cam - depending on the lathe, to adjust the locking position you can either wind the locking plate beneath the bed closes or further up the shaft it is on or sometimes the position of the cam on the shaft can be rotated so it locks in your preferred position.

    Alan Lacer Skew - BIG

Have a look at Alan’s videos on YT and the picture - the profile is straight for first 1/4 or 1/3rd and then the curve kicks in. Essentially you grind the profile with the tool at 90 deg to the wheel, then set the rest to grind the bevels flipping it over to keep the cutting edge in the centre...

    Alan Lacer Skew - BIG

So one thing I’ve never really been 100% comfortable with has been my skew work - Having watched Alan Lancer demonstrate on several YT recorded ’club night’ sessions I decided to give his design of tool a go. A while ago I picked up a number of Record HSS larges scrappers new as part of a...

Scrapers - why not go negative

So I’ve seen a lot about turners who use negative rake scrapers. loads of positives - easier to use, good finish on the timber, no catches, equal ability to shear scrape etc etc. In terms of regular scrapers only benefit I can see is that the edge / burr may last a little longer. so my Q is...
