some advice on oil finish please

Hi, I am restoring an old Norris plane and have stained the wood ( beech) a nice colour, using a stain that Jimi43 sent me. After the stain dried, I applied a coat of boiled linseed oil. All was looking good, so i applied another, but this one has not dried yet after 2 days and the surface is...

Restoring an old Norris No 5

Hi Jimi, that looks pretty nice, although always tricky until you see it in real life.. If its no trouble I would certainly like to try it. I am pretty much decided that I am not going to do it black like it was before, I agree it would be nice if you could see the old wood and the various...

Advice on iron / vinegar stain

I have tried it on the beech infill of an old plane I am restoring, but it does not seem to have made much difference yet....

Advice on iron / vinegar stain

Hi, I am trying to make this, have used fine steel wool and distilled white ( or clear) malt vinegar, and it has been sitting there for 5 days now and is still clear, no hint of a dark colour. I have obviously done something wrong ( type of vinegar perhaps? - i could not see "white vinegar" in...

Festool... Anyone else tearing their hair out?

I have been using festo for over 12 years now, and have pretty much everything they make. Up until 2 years ago, I was using it all pretty much every day and I dont think i have ever had one tool go wrong or need any kind of service. I have replaced several plug it leads, but that is it and...

Restoring an old Norris No 5

If I go for the stained and oiled finish, do you think I should use a natural dark stain first, (wire wool in vinegar) and then put boiled linseed oil on? Should I use any kind of sealer first? After the linseed oile, some wax and a nice buff up? Cheers, Mark

japanese chisel problem- tool or user?

Well Rutlands are taking them back and issuing a credit. I think I will get the ones on Classic tools's website as recommended by DC By the way, the first one I returned, they said they inspected and did pronounce faulty, so who knows, a bad batch, poor quality control? Or maybe just like the...

japanese chisel problem- tool or user?

Well, I thought Rutlands was a pretty good site....until i discovered classichandtools.co.uk...!!! I have got a fair bit of stuff from them, mostly veritas, and they are pretty good for choice, but its like driving a ford and then a BMW, That's unanimous then, I will send them back. Is there a...

japanese chisel problem- tool or user?

I know, almost certainly user ! let me explain - I have just got a set of these from Rutlands, these: http://www.rutlands.co.uk/hand-tools/ch ... -chiselsse: I am new to using this type of chisels, but have read great things about them. I am a carpenter of 30 years experience, albeit it...

Restoring an old Norris No 5

Regarding the wood, I am undecided - I am not sure how the stained and marked beech will look if I use linseed oil and wax for example, although that kind of finish would be my preference rather than the laquered black ebonised finish. Hmmmmmm...

Restoring an old Norris No 5

here is some pictures: Dont think I am unheeding ( or ungrateful) of the advice , I just want the plane to look as nice as it can and I hate the signs of neglect such as pitting and bad finish.

Restoring an old Norris No 5

Well, I wont be selling mine, it's for my personal useage and enjoyment, ( therefore I am not worried abouts its resale value) so I will press on with the "restoration" to get it looking nice. Especially as its not one of the earlier rosewood types, that are very desirable, I think it will be...

Restoring an old Norris No 5

Out of interest why do most of you think that keeping it " warts and all" is better than making look like it should do if had not been neglected over time? I appreciate everyone has their opinion and a lot of this is subjective. Personally, I hate tarnish, rust, dents, scratches and dull...

Advice on Metabo bandsaw BAS 317

Well thanks for the advice guys, I went along to the woodwork show in Ally pally yesterday and got myself a couple of new blades from Bevingtons, however, when I tried the bandsaw today , prior to changing them, it would not turn on. The socket is ok , other tools work plugged in to it, so I...

Restoring an old Norris No 5

Thanks for all the advice, I have started polishing up the sides and sole and the cap iron etc and its starting to look pretty nice. There were some scratches and rougher patches on the paint, if I decide to strip it and refinish it, what would you recommend ? I t looks like it has several...

Restoring an old Norris No 5

Hi, I recently managed to buy a Norris number 5 infill type smoother. Its in not back condition, but I would like it look better. The wood has been painted over with a gloss black finish and the metal sole and frame is in pretty good nick. It still works very nicely however. Will I be reducing...

Hi everyone, new on the forums here, i just brought the above saw but am a little dissapointed ( although from what I have read i should not be...) I am currently just starting to make my own bench and have some lovely 3 inch thick steamed beech for the top. However, the saw wont cut it, the...
