    Mystery Stanley bailey 4 & a half

Hi Vann, Guilano, yes, its the sole that throws up the questions, as both guides state that the raised ring and made in USA on the toe indicate a type 14, however, the complete lack of any stamps behind the frog say a 15. If it was a 14, it would have a patent date behind the frog, if it was a...

    Mystery Stanley bailey 4 & a half

It's a 4 and a half in size / number...... not type i can post some photos if you like, but I have described all the salient points. rexmill and hyperkitten indicate it as being around the 14 or 15 type age, but it has piqued my interest that it has definite features of both type, which is...

    Mystery Stanley bailey 4 & a half

my latest E-bay acquisition is proving a bit of a mystery to positively identify. I hope some of you more knowledgeable bailey buffs can help. I think its a type 14 or 15, but it has features of both on the sole and frog as follows: It has " made in USA" at the front of the toe and "Bailey"...

Hi guys, I picked up the plane yesterday, it needed a bit of lovin, after an hour or so of polishing and waxing and some french polish on the handles, it looks the nuts. Its certainly never been used. I have carefully checked the sole with a straight edge and cant see any problems as described...

    My workbench Project

Thanks Steve, I am very pleased myself at the way it turned out, there some mistakes, but as a first major project of this kind, I am very happy with the result. Usually, I am building houses and fitting kitchens, so this is a different direction for me. I am looking forward now to using it to...

African azobe - any good for making stuff from?

Hi, would the above wood be good for using in furniture making etc ? I have found plenty of mention of it being used in landscaping and outdoor stuff, but not as a material for finer projects. It seems to plane up quite nice and is a nice colour, but very hard. Any advice welcome Cheers, Mark

Hi guys, can any of the resident plane gurus give me their opinions on the above plane? I just got one at what i think is a pretty good price ( £200) mint in the box with certificate. Obviously I intend fully to use it, it looks like a very nicely made bit of kit. A quick search here did not...

    My workbench Project

Well guys and girls, its finally finished!! John's advice re the diagonal braces was taken and has proved remarkably effective in stopping the flex, so I am very pleased about that and they dont look too bad actually, in fact, i think they add to increasing the "rightness" of how it looks.. I...

Material for Drawer lining for tool storage

What would you guys recommend as a good material to line the drawers in my workbench, where I will be storing planes etc? I looked at Alcantara, ( artificial suede), but it was £140 per metre!!! The drawer is made from Birch ply, I just wanted something nice looking and feeling that could be...

Hi, using the hyperkitten dating flow chart, one of the questions is" does the plane have " a raised, broad, flat rib casting". Can someone post a picture of a plane with this feature please? Cheers, Mark

    My workbench Project

I have dowelled all the joints, and there was zero movement in the frame as far as I could tell, before I put the top onto the frame. Hmmm, this is going to be tricky I think. I am going to start with the discreet bracing and see if helps, the problem is, getting the brace in the right place...

    My workbench Project

Hi Pete, as far as I can make out, the flex is a movement in 2 directions, and 2 planes - as I push along the length of the bench, from right to left, when the plane digs in or encounters a bit of resistance, the whole thing moves very slightly to the left and rear at the same time, so the flex...

    My workbench Project

Actually, using it yesterday, I noticed some movement when planing using the front vice, planing along the front of the bench. I had originally planned for the legs to be wider, but found when i came to do them, that the position of the front vice made this impossible, unless I had them offset...
