    Mains detector

What’s the hand on the wall thing? I didn’t see that in the instructions on mine (I did actually read them for once because the performance of this thing is so poor)

    Mains detector

No, live. It seems to thing EVERYTHING is live though. It’s just massively over sensitive for live electricity, and it also is wildly inconsistent on finding studs. When I just used it last I just used my knowledge of the wall (it’s a loft room and I had rewired the lights in the ceiling a...

Hey magic 8ball Bosch, is there a live cable here?

    Mains detector

I’m really surprised at so many people rating the Bosch one, I bought a different model at a similar price and honestly it’s no more accurate than rolling a dice. Land on a 3 or a 6 and there’s a cable there all the other number = no cable. Usually I just apply common sense. Assess both sides...

    Christmas gift for beginner

I think all people who do hand woodwork will have one of these tools in their kit, I feel like I’ve learned enough watching that video to know that I don’t know what I’m talking about enough to speak any authority on the matter 😂

    Christmas gift for beginner

I had a quick google to see if there were any videos to show you what this tool does and how it works, and it turns out every day is a school day! I was using it wrong 😂 I used a marking gauge when I should have used a cutting gage (I have only just found out they are different and things)...

    Christmas gift for beginner

Benchdogs do laser engraving themselves on some of their other products, so I’m sure if that was the present that was chosen then a quick email should suffice. I would definitely +1 on their square. I think their stuff is lovely. I would have suggested the exact square you linked only it’s a...

    Christmas gift for beginner

Do you know much about how we enjoyed working or how he expects to set up when he gets back into it? Some people favour hand tools, whereas some people prefer power tools. Also what is your budget? I would agree with other posters that the gift that will get the most enjoyment will be one...

Workshop burgled, now my tools are on eBay

Yeah I was very much the same. I bit my tongue a lot, and then before you know it I found myself being sucked in. Anyway, if it’s any scant consolation to the OP, then his woes have given me the kick up the arse I need to itinerarize and evidence my tools in case I ever get burgled again.

Workshop burgled, now my tools are on eBay

Given that we know there have, and will continue to be, miscarriages of justice that result in the incarceration of innocent people, are you proposing that the state should kill a few innocent citizens as collateral damage in the hope that killing all the guilty will result in less reoffending...

    Broken wood lamp

Actually, thinking logically these were probably two separate rotten fence posts, dried, re-milled, and positioned to look like one beam that has snapped
  12. L

    Broken wood lamp

I suspect this was originally a much longer wooden beam. You would need a lot of force and a lot of leverage to snap a beam that thick. Place a fulcrum in the middle, firmly secure one end of the beam and then apply force to the other end over the fulcrum. I really can’t think in a domestic...

Workshop burgled, now my tools are on eBay

I’d rather remind you that your opinions fail to account for the innocent people who are found guilty. If your opinion is that “an eye for an eye” is fair, then what do we do in a situation where the courts kill somebody who is later found by scientific developments to be innocent? Do we kill...

Workshop burgled, now my tools are on eBay

Your assertion’s aren’t based in fact. I have a degree in criminology, and numerous studies have found capital punishment and draconian punishment not to be a deterrent at all. When somebody commits a crime, they assume they will get away with it, they don’t think of the consequences of getting...

Workshop burgled, now my tools are on eBay

I think these are sentiments everybody in this thread agrees with tbf, the disagreement comes after this fact has been established. Is it okay for one citizen to enact violence on another so long as they assume* the person they are assaulting to be guilty? *bear in mind that if they were able...

Workshop burgled, now my tools are on eBay

One thing your thoughts don’t account for here are false accusations. Sure you may feel it’s okay to hospitalise somebody who stole from you, but what if you were certain that you had found the right person when you hospitalised them, but then later found out that you had made a mistake; was it...

Table Saw kickback and trimmed finger (Graphic description & images)

I’m not armchair critiquing, I was asking a genuine question. I can’t understand what he’s describing, or if I can then I can’t fathom how he would be able to plane a board flat using long push sticks as I can’t see how they would be stable enough. I do at some stage (in the distant future)...

Table Saw kickback and trimmed finger (Graphic description & images)

I’m struggling to see it tbh, but then as I’ve said I’ve never actually used one before so I can only go off what I’ve seen in YouTube (hardly the greatest of sources). I can see a case for using a push stick on the infeed side, though maybe a long stick with a hook on the end to pull the...

Table Saw kickback and trimmed finger (Graphic description & images)

That’s on a table saw, I was asking about his views on push sticks on the planer. Edit: I’ve just realised your post may have not been a response to mine

Table Saw kickback and trimmed finger (Graphic description & images)

I like this way of thinking. It seems a good and easy rule to follow. Use sticks sufficiently sized that mean your hands never go above the table. I am a bit confused by your stance of using them on the planer though. It’s another tool I haven’t used before so forgive my ignorance, but I...
