This pencil-case sized box is my take on a Japanese toolbox. The toolboxes are typically made with extremely simple construction, relying on nails to hold everything together. I didn't want to use nails as I was more interested in practising joinery techniques. The lighter coloured wood is...

Thanks Yes, I did that: the tips are hollow ground which (assuming it's ground with the bit near the tip on a tangent to the grinding wheel, which I was careful to do) has the effect of making the tip parallel.

Yesterday, I made a couple of screwdriver blades (if that's the right word). A lot of the old Stanley planes have slotted (yuck) screws (e.g. the fence and depth stop screws as well as the "nicker" screw on the #45 shown in the photo). I currently tend to get a screwdriver bit holder handle...

Thank you. Yes. I printed it out on a piece of paper and stuck it to the wood with masking tape, then used a knife to transfer the lines and a couple of chisels to form the shape.

Yesterday and this morning I made (just using hand tools as usual) my fifth one of these leaf tea caddies: It's made of American black walnut with mitred (at the bottom) dovetails and the same simple hinge I've used on all the other ones. I've now made three with "TEA" carved into the top...

    Travel Tool Chest / Workbench

Thanks both. @Dan Adamson, I started mid-2020 (Covid pandemic woodworker!). Initially it was mostly power tool stuff (table saw, router etc), but I've since sold the table saw and I think my woodwork has come on leaps and bounds since I did that as it forced me to find ways to do things...

    Travel Tool Chest / Workbench

I haven't posted anything on here for a while, but I thought some people might be interested in an update on the travel tool chest / workbench. I've just got back from two weeks' holiday in Brittany, during which we had quite a lot of time spent at the cottage (as my other half is recovering...

    3D and cad

DesignSpark is quite severely limited so I always advise against it. In particular, it doesn't allow (without paying extra) the ability to export STEP files. STEP files are representations of your model that can be loaded into another CAD application and relatively easily edited. You don't...

A set of four boxes, all made with hand tools only (although some of the timber had previously been resawn on a bandsaw). They were made while on holiday in Brittany, using my Travel Tool Chest & Workbench. The one on the left (which has a couple of drawers) isn't finished yet as I need to...

    Stolen tools news article

That's a terrible idea. I've bought loads of antique tools from car boot sales. If people can't sell old tools, they'll end up in the bin. The stuff that gets nicked will get sold via other means so it won't make any difference to theft, just result in more waste. The petition's specifically...

Knew concept saw (coping or fret)

I bought the 5" Knew fret saw with the swivel blade clamps. It's excellent: I hated using fret saws before I bought that one. If I were buying again, I'd go with the 3" model: the swivel blade clamps mean that you don't really need the extra depth of the 5" body (at least for anything I do)...

A little plane (150 mm long, 40 mm wide, 30 mm high). Body is beech, American Black Walnut and brass. Adjuster mechanism is 303 stainless & brass, lever cap is brass, lever cap nut is 303 stainless. Intended for use on the shooting board that's built into my travel tool chest & workbench...

Collection of 3d printing files relevant for woodworking

I just poured some white spirit in & left it for 20 minutes. Doesn't seem to have affected it at all.

PETG (the only filament I use). I've no idea how it'll cope with white spirit, but I'll find out soon.

A very simple measuring jug with a small lip at the height to which it should be filled. I made this for mixing up my favourite wood finish ("Mike's Magic Mix": equal parts satin varnish, white spirit and pure tung oil) - I use a litre bottle to hold it, so I figured that a 300 ml measuring jug...

    Shooting board woes

I used the 5-cut method on mine (after I got a comment from a member on another forum questioning whether it would be accurate enough). The 5-cut method showed it was more accurate than I could measure. I didn't permanently fix the fence with wood screws though, I just use three M6 cap screws...

A simple M33×3.5 thread protector for my home-made lathe: I made it hexagonal just to make it easy to grip to screw it on / unscrew it. I would arguably have been better with a knurled pattern, but hexagonal was quicker to model in CAD.
