    Cutting threads on Handle bolts

Hi Ian. I can't help myself, I'm a pedant. I believe Falcon and Falcon-Pope were the same firm. Actually Pope was the firm and initially they branded their planes "Falcon" but later added the "Pope". I believe Falcons came out around 1955 and finished up ~1965. At that point either they were...

Does the look of a tool/machine affect your buying decision?

The appearance of a tool has a slight influence on me. But not as much as the country of origin. If a tool is made in China I'll put it right back on the shelf (unless there's no alternative tool or method of doing the job). Cheers, Vann.

Protection for cast iron for long term storage

I was going to suggest boiled linseed oil. I have a bit of dampness in my garage/workshop - especially in the winter (and it's been wet, cold and miserable here lately - swap you for some of that 40 degree heat you're enjoying). At first I tried camellia oil (just cause I had some), but that's...

Do I want a Clifton No 4, or No 4 1/2 smoothing plane?

I'm with those who say the No.4.5 too heavy. I have one and seldom use it. My only other Clifton is a No.3 and I love it. But I don't use either for chuting. My tuppence worth. Cheers, Vann.

    Dominion Planer Thicknesser help

Gibs. Here's an example from one of my machines. A table slides between the two "dovetails". One dovetail is the gib for adjusting play to take up wear etc. Edit: or as Deema says above - sometimes the gibs aren't tapered - in which case I guess they have a retaining plate to stop them...

    Dominion Planer Thicknesser help

I know nothing about Dominion machines, but on a Sagar planer/trhicknesser those springs have nuts/wingnut for adjustment (they're supposed to all have wingnuts but I guess two are missing in this photo). However these are for adjustment of the pressure of the feed rollers and pressure bars -...

    Dominion Planer Thicknesser help

Autocorrect is NOT your friend, or not Deema's friend anyway. I believe he was intending to type "gibs" - as in lengths of steel/iron with one side tapered. When located in the machine these will have two or more bolts engage the non-tapered edge. Used to adjust the amount of play in sliding...

    Joke Thread II

And I genuinely struggled with this one for weeks: Venus by Shocking blue "Well, I'm your Venus, I'm your fire, at your desire". It didn't sound like "Venus" to me. And what I did think it sounded like, might have filled his partner's desire :dunno: Cheers, Vann.

    Marples 4 1/2 plane rebuild

I understand that. I just wanted to make sure people weren't given wrong information on the threads. Here is the correct list of threads as used on Stanley and Record planes (and no doubt several other brands). Cheers, Vann.

    Marples 4 1/2 plane rebuild

The tote and knob screws, like the frog screws, are 7/32" 20 tpi. Once the hole is flogged out a 1/4" 20 tpi tap should fit nicely. But then screw it your 7/32 stud and screw it up tight, and you'll strip it right out of the hole (probably causing further damage in the process). Cheers, Vann.

    Marples 4 1/2 plane rebuild

I'm sorry but I believe you are wrong. You cannot possibly be correct as UNC/UNF were formalised in 1949. Mr Bailey began making his planes in 1869 and Stanley has used the same threads throughout (until they changed to metric in the 1990s). There were no standard threads back then, with the...

    Greetings from the Pacific

Welcome to the forum. Well, wood IS a vegetable. We used to have a "Midlands" here - well a Midland Railway - which now carries the (possibly famous) TranzAlpine train (the only long distance train still running in New Zealand :(). My older brother used to joke about Waikikamukau (pronounced...

    Clifton 3110 ?!

Looking at the 3110 on Thos. Flinn's site, it's the one with initials on the side that has the odd lever-cap. I wouldn't pay 200 quid for a second hand plane when a new one is only £17.70 more at Thos Flinn/Workshop Heaven (or £10 more at Classic Hand Tools). And I'd be worried about that odd...

    Wm Marples bench planes.

Mr Bailey invented metal planes in the mid 1800s, before Mr Whitworth (and others) had invented standards. As a result he selected thread counts that he thought might be suitable for various functions on his planes. Years later when British Standard Whitworth was established, only one of Mr...

    Joke Thread II

Nope. I checked the spelling of both - several times. There's no C in either of them. Not a little c. Not a capital C. Cheers, Vann.

    Sir Paul

I haven't seen his performance yet (too preoccupied watching youtube clip of the Ukrainian war), but I like Paul McCartney - I think he was the best Beatle. I saw him live (with Wings) when he visited Auckland around 1994/95 (one of very few live concerts I've been to). I'd just broken up with...

    Spokeshave difference

Good luck. If it's a curved base one, they're trickier to use. I'd have recommended a flat base spokeshave to learn on. DAMHIKT. Flat base spokeshaves can do gentle inside curves such as found on wooden hammer handles. My (flat base) spokeshave is my daughter's favourite tool in my workshop...

Wadkin 10" AGS and BAOS 12"

If your machine has a DOL starter, only one phase will be used to active the coil, and therefore a single phase kill switch can be connected in series with the existing Off push button. Cheers, Vann.
