you'll never guess why my early record 8 is hard adjusting

You haven't said how early that Record is (what type). The first 'type' (1931-1939) are reputedly the best, even having nickled frog screws. Maybe it's a "warfinish" (2nd type, 1939-1945), with less detail in the finish? Although I have a "warfinish" No.04ss, and it's very nicely made. Record...

    Yankee screwdrivers

I bought a #130 (middle size) when I was an apprentice in the 1970s. In the 2000s, while on a "hand tool kick" I bought a couple more along with a couple of #131 (large size). I use them frequently. Mostly with square drive screws. Cheers, Vann.

Old Lthes for a working heritage workshop in South Africa

Hi. You would need to put up more photos of each lathe. I know very little about lathes (with the exception of Wadkin lathes) but I suggest that there's a remote chance the second photo is of a "Britannia" lathe. Lathes.co is your friend, and possibly vintagemachinery.org (though they are...

Old Machines for a working heritage museum.

Ahh, I beg to differ. They were still producing the DN/DNA bandsaw in 1935. Wadkin changed their name from "Wadkin & Co." to "Wadkin Ltd." in 1935, and that style of nameplate was introduced in mid-1936. Sorry. Cheers, Vann.

Old Machines for a working heritage museum.

As others have said, it's a Wadkin RS woodlathe. They came in 3 sizes: 6", 8" and 10" swing, and with or without the traveling tool rest. Test 33767 was carried out at Wadkin's Green Lane Works, Leicester, in 1949. For parts, you are best to keep an eye out on Ebay UK (for often horribly...

Same here. My Clico era No.3 is a favorite. Cheers, Vann.

Frog and adjuster knob needed for Year 2000 Clifton no.5 Plane

I don't know if your Juma frog has arrived yet, but.... I have played around with a Clifton 4.5 and LN No.4.5, and the frogs are not interchangeable. Similarly I tried swapping frogs between an LN No.5.25 and my Clifton No.3 (both 1 3/4" irons). Again the frogs werenot quite interchangeable...

Has the "wadkin appreciation" FB group expired?

I'm the owner of six Wadkin machines. I'm also such a luddite that I refuse to join Farcebook - so I can't help you I'm afraid.

    Wadkin feed motor control switch

I'm not familiar with the BAOS (too recent for my taste in Wadkin ;)). Do you have a picture of the original switch? Cheers, Vann.

Found Veritas low angle jack blades - 38, 50 and toothed!

Hi Dave. Can I suggest that you buy the standard blades (25 degrees?) and put on your desired 38 or 50 degree bevel as a mirco-bevel. That makes it much easier to experiment with different bevels to suit differring timbers. I.e. it's much easier to reduce the cutting angle by 5 degrees on a 25...

New Toy - Clifton no 4

IMHO, as a great fan of two-piece cap-irons, I'd say the two-piece will make no difference to the performance of a plane with a thick cutting iron (such as your Clifton or an LN). Where it might give you an advantage would be if you hone by hand (no honing guide). Then you can lift the...

    Thicknesser electrics

Krauss & Namer make very good switches that are almost identical to this one - and will be available in Australia through any good electrical wholesaler. However I suspect switching high currents during start-up might be asking for trouble. I wonder why they fitted a start/delta switch for a...

    Stanley or Record ?

You must be referring to USA made Stanleys as (to the best of my knowledge) no-one has come up with a way of dating English Stanleys yet (though there is a very good site for dating Records thanks to the late David Lynch). It's not the output I have a problem with (that's the fault of western...

    Stanley or Record ?

    Well technically.... if it's a Record then it's a No.06... I prefer Record to Stanley of the same age. Record seemed to hold their quality longer. I almost have the set - No.03, 03ss, 04, 04ss, 04 1/2, 04 1/2ss, 05, 05ss, 05 1/2, 05 1/2ss, 06, 06ss, 07, 07ss, 08 and 08ss (from the days when...
