Rust removal with a glass fibre brush

Not necessarily, but the linen drawings were probably older than both of us put together. When I first started working in the drawing office (1980) they still had original tracings of steam locomotives built in the 1860s. We would very occasionally make alterations to drawings of parts that...

Rust removal with a glass fibre brush

Not really. The needle scaler uses hammer action to break away rust, paint, whatever. The glass fibre brush uses a sweeping motion. What they have in common is the use of multiple "needles" to get into corners etc - but IMHO the similarity ends there. When I worked as a draughtsman years ago...

    War-era Stanley

You are right. Stanley UK started with the features of the current Stanley USA planes of the day (type 16) and then made their own changes. I wonder if the first UK patterns were actually made in the USA (with appropriate changes)? Record copied the earlier type 14 (or type 15) when they began...

    War-era Stanley

Quite right about the Record castings. But I disagree about the lack of changes in the UK Stanleys. There are numerous little changes. The early ones (as mentioned in my previous post) are quite different in casting details. Later there were changes to handle nuts (aluminium for a period in...

    War-era Stanley

Stanley bought JA Chapman in December, 1936, to form Stanley UK. So they had barely begun making "Stanley" tools when war broke out. Some of their early planes have quite different detail to what became the "normal" Stanley UK planes. They may even have made the early castings "in-house" - I...

    New Norris A5

Richard, I bought one of these recently. They're available in New Zealand from G & A Warburtons Ltd at a reasonable price (I bought mine to clean electrical contacts on switchgear). Cheers, Vann.

    Faithfull no3 finishing plane review

I don't think the case is relevant when assessing a plane. Otherwise even Clifton, Lie-Neilsen and Veritas planes would have to be marked down, as they come in cardboard packaging. IMHO it is better that manufacturers concentrate on the quality of the working plane, rather than on accessories of...

    New Veritas Combination Plane

As do the Stanley #50/Record #050 combination planes. But I do like the look of the knicker on this new plane - it looks much easier to use. Cheers, Vann.

    New Veritas Combination Plane

Interesting too that it's come out about a year after the Clifton multi-plane (a 45/405 clone) went out of stock. Cheers, Vann.

    rapier planes

Yes, I kinda did, didn't I. Ah well, back to normal programming. Cheers, Vann.

I quite agree. :D Cheers, Vann.

    rapier planes

This is why I've gone off Derek. He seems to decide that you don't need to know things. If he can't tell the difference, can he tell the difference between a piece of rough sawn timber and a finely planed surface? If I'd bought a Rapier 043 for parts for my Record 043, on the strength of...

Replacing the plastic handle on a Record 044C

I have the same problem with my Record 043 - 3/16" cutter in Pinus Radiata (about the only thing I've used it for to date). Love it though. Cheers, Vann.

    Faithfull planes

Just a small clarification: the cap is a lever - whether actuated by a screw or a cam. So yours will have a screw actuated "lever-cap". And the "cap-iron" is the 2mm thick steel screwed to the "cutting-iron" or blade. Looking forward to your impressions of the planes. Cheers, Vann.

    Anyone got this planer?

You thought you were American? :D Cheers, Vann.

Which vintage Plough/Combination Plane should you buy?

The Clifton multi-plane - another No.45 clone, and only just out of production (though I suspect recent sales were old stock from early Clico days - maybe mid 2000s). Cheers, Vann.
