    Veritas stock

Sounds like a good idea to me. I don't know if it would be better to put the handles in a different piece of luggage, or in the carry-on bags. But, even if they did get confiscated, at least you'd still have the plane. Making new handles would be a pain, but less of a pain than losing the...

Did you say you're paying postage? I'm in New Zealand  Cheers, Vann.

    Record 0120 plane

I'll say! It's been flamin hot down here in the south Pacific. Unusually so. I can't do a thing without perspiring profusely... I'll get me coat... (nah, hang on, that'll make me sweat more #-o ). Cheers, Vann.

    Thomas White PH jointer

Hi Graham. It's only a "Quick Reference Catalogue" but next time you drive down SH1, stop at the Timber Museum just south of Putaruru. They've got this in their "safe". And the only page I photographed... Cheers, Vann.

Wadkin PP dimensional saw and DR bandsaw

Very nice. I don't think I've ever seen an RS woodlathe on Trademe, and possibly only one PP dimension saw (quite recently). Do your machines still have their Wadkin badges showing Serial & Test numbers? Don't throw away those guides too quickly. They're Chaco guides, still made in Switzerland...

    R.I.P. No 10

Just be aware that Stanley use a completely different frog arrangement to Record. Record use a standard No.3 size frog. Stanley use a much earlier frog design in their No.10, No.10 1/4 and No.10 1/2 planes, that aren't interchangeable with No.3 or No.5 1/4 planes. Cheers, Vann.

    R.I.P. No 10

I've had three planes arrive broken: a Rapier No.500 (No.5 size) no great loss; a Record No.05 - would have been a really nice plane; and a Stanley No.4 that had the side broken off before posting - so bought for parts anyway. I don't like using bubble wrap. The first time it's dropped some...

Which Veritas plane do I buy?

That would have been my recommendation too. Have you considered the BUS (Veritas Bevel Up Smoother). It has a very good reputation and is quite a bit smaller (= lighter for air travel) than the chuting plane. My own feelings regarding bench planes are: - don't spend big money on a new roughing...

    Wadkin RS restoration

Nah, the RS is the middle size (actually 3 middle sizes: 6" 8" & 10"). The RT is the baby of the group. And I think one of the later Wadkin-Bursgreen woodlathes might be slightly smaller again. Cheers, Vann.

Quick favour from someone with a Record #08 or #02 please?

Well, to be a pedantic old fart, the OP is collecting Record planes, and Record never made a 5¼ (the T5 being their "equivalent"). And then he would need not one, but two slots for his T5s - as he would need to have both a 2¼" T5 and a 2" T5  Oh, and two slots for his 05½s - for a 2¼"...

Evolution of the Record 52 1/2 quick release vice

I've been doing a lot of research into Wadkin machines - and I'm finding the same thing. Conflicting or illogical results :? In the end you can only show what you've found, and propose a theory or two about why it doesn't stack up. To me, it looks like the second (and third) ones have the ends...

Mortice chisels (and a record shoulder plane)

I recon you're a jammy bugger :!: I'm obviously not doing the right searches on TradeMe. Well done Richard. Cheers, Vann.

I'm really enjoying your "series", and I'm impressed with your research. Keep it up. Cheers, Vann.

    painted iron?

I can't speak from experience, but I would think that whether you use BLO, wax, or paint :? you should do a thorough de-rusting first. Electrolysis, or one of those chemical treatments that will get into pores, cracks and crevices to kill all rust. I've tried clear lacquer on the lateral...

Evolution of the Record 52 1/2 quick release vice

A-ha, that's what I was trying to describe when I wrote "...These vices have five ribs on the front jaw (one vertical; two at 45deg; & two almost horizontal); "RD 664 709" toward the top; and an elliptical boss on the screw where the handle passes through...". A picture is worth a thousand words...

Evolution of the Record 52 1/2 quick release vice

Having a glance through "Record Tools", the reprint of Record's Catalogue No.15 of 1938, I see there were then three versions of the No.52, 52½ and 53 woodworkers' vices. These were: - the No. 52, No. 52½ and No.53 which are described as "With Quick-grip and Continuous Screw Action" (i.e. quick...

Evolution of the Record 52 1/2 quick release vice

I struck something similar when looking at the patent for North Bros "Yankee" drills. Taking my drill apart, and working through the gobbledegook, I managed to work out almost all of what they meant. I've been meaning to do a thread on that for several years (where's that damned round tuit?)...

    Half or split cap iron

As others have said: It's a 2-piece design made by Record who called it "Stay Set" (and put "SS" on their lever caps on planes that have that design of cap-iron). Record produced the Stay Set from 1931 to 1964. Clico re-introduced the 2-piece when they began producing Clifton bench planes about...

Rust removal with a glass fibre brush

I think there was still a part roll of linen in the tracings store room, but I never saw anyone do a new drawing on linen (and there was no reason to think that roll was newer than the 1870s tracings  ) but then I think the new plastic (mylar?) film arrived in the drawing office...
