    Just a trug

The trug I use is very flexible. They are really rugged too - so no problem with it getting kicked about a bit.

    Just a trug

I thought I'd write a short piece on one of the best (fairly) recent additions to my hand tool workshop. The humble trug! I now keep one permenantly next to my bench. It is put just ahead of me when I'm planing wood. In the past each pass of the plane would leave a shaving on the floor. Now a...

I read the article too. Very interesting.

Your favourite thing you have made from reclaimed timber 🤔 📸

It's my favourite because it's my latest: bedside table made mostly from reclaimed mahogany

Are we being ripped off by tool retailers?

Vacuum hoses! Why are they so expensive. Why is a basic hose: https://www.yandles.co.uk/record-power-camvac-noise-reducing-outlet-black-hose-plastic-fit/p20991 Almost the same price as a whole cheap workshop vac with hose and fittings...

    Work Shoes

I wear a cheap pair of steel toe capped boots when I work in the workshop. They're comfortable and easy to get on and off. And I like the reassurance of the steelies when I'm moving larger bits of lumber and using hand held power tools. I also have a couple of old rugs on my garage concrete...

Good description of how a handplane works.

I agree ... But I'm still glad I've got a couple of honing guides. My standard practice is to sharpen by hand. But there are couple of instances where a honing guide is useful: Narrow chisels. Quarter inch and narrower. I find the lack of width often leads to a skew on narrow chisels when...

A question for the computer literate

Hmmm. If the RAM speeds don't match there is a good chance the system will work at the speed of the slowest RAM. However, that does not mean that putting in more RAM will not have a significant improvement in performance. That is if you put in two more 4Gb of faster RAM in it won't be quite as...

    Patreon and blog subscription prices

Is it just me or are Patreon and blog subscription pricing bonkers. They typically start at a fiver a month. The price for many streaming services isn't much more than that. Netflix cheapest tier is £4.99. For that I can get all of Netflix's content made my thousands of creators. It's not much...

    import duty.

I have bought from Fine Tools and wrote about it here: https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/threads/saw-and-plane-from-germany.141725/ However, things have changes a little since then. The process of selling to UK customers is more difficult for them now, which has had a number of consequences. I'd...

Boxes, jigs and a bangy bang stick

Ah! does this lead us to the is it a "hammer or mallet" debate. I've tended to use a small hammer too (with soft faces) to adjust planes, but was interested to see how a wooden "mallet" would compare.

    Brace and bit

It's worth getting a set of brace bits. They are fairly easy to get secondhand on ebay, and there are some available new. For example: https://workshopheaven.com/drill-bits/hand-forged-brace-augers/ I am often amazed at how quickly a good auger bit will cut a hole using a brace.

Boxes, jigs and a bangy bang stick

I'm currently working on a bedside table. It's taking a while as I like doing things by hand, am not very good at it, and in no hurry. But I am learning a few things along the way ... A handy tool box I bought a few wooden boxes from The Works recently. They are a nice size, cheap and great...

Hock blade in old spoke shave

A couple of months ago I found a lovely spokeshave going for a quid in a house reclamation store locally. It felt lovely in my hand, but had no blade. So I bought it and put it on a shelf as a "one day I'll find a matching part" project. Over the weekend I was looking at some Hock blades as I...

Any tips for a small paint drying station?

I've found attaching sets of paint drying pyramids to thin boards really helpful. The individual pyramids are too flimsy and easily moved/flipped. Sets of 3 or 4 attached to a small piece of hardboard are stable and easy to place.
