    Phillips bits

I use Pozi for almost everything except show areas such as hinges, where I use the Wurth star drive screws. They are quite expensive but they have all the qualities of Torx or Robertson. Plus they look very pretty. The bits are brilliant- I have been using these screws for about 15 years and I...

    Wood bending question

I hate to say it, but I would cut my losses. I can't see you being able to get much to change here. I would make a new one and think of ways to repurpose your first attempt.

    Blum71B3550 hinges

3/4" no.6 generally works. Obvs they have to be no longer than your door is thick!

Sagging drawer unit made from MDF

The centre divider between the upper drawers is already a bracket. It has way more strength than you need. The problem is that it isn’t fixed to the wall. If you jack it up as suggested earlier- maybe a bit too high- and then fix it securely to the wall, it should be fine. You will need to make...

    Looking for help

In the days before thicknessers, when people were laying floorboards on joists, the floorboards were generally quite variable in thickness. They got around this by chiselling shallow channels on the undersides of the thicker boards, just where the joists were. In this way they could get away...

    Curved kitchen cupboard doors

I've had mixed results using MDF. I would definitely avoid the kerfed MDF. I now use flexiply exclusively as it's much more reliable. I use a radius a little smaller than the actual, and fix the pressed panels with cramps or bits of scrap for at least a day to allow the glue to fully cross-link...

    Bending Ply - recommendations

For that application, I would go for contact cement, I think. Poplar is quite soft so that could be your best bet.

    Routing Question

If I wanted to make a precise 8mm groove using a 6mm cutter and a straight edge, I would set up the straight edge to make the first cut, and then take a second straight edge, clamp it so that it was touching the first one, loosen the first straight edge, and put two 2mm drill bits or other...

Do you take care over the invisible bits?

The Shakers believe that as God can see round the back of a chest of drawers as easily as the front, the back should be finished as well as the front. I was an antique restorer for many years, and what people have said above about antiques is mostly true. However, particularly from early...

How to deal with embedded wood screw in a bowl

I'd have left it in. Part of the history!

    Rotating lathe stand options

Could you do something like in the attached scrawl? You could use the bolt holes for the long bed on your Graduate. Respect for that huge chunk of apple wood, BTW!

    Aldel's Universal Workholder

Hi, I'm not getting any of your images apart from the last one, and the Aldel link comes up as forbidden! Is it me or you?

    Workshop hourly rate

I would absolutely do it on an hourly rate. It's very easy to underestimate how long a job will take. If you were ripping 10 boards or even 100, it wouldn't be a catastrophe. 1,000 or 2,000 boards- it definitely could. The worst mistake I ever made in quoting for a job was when I was asked to...

Why aren't 'dovetailed M/Ts' more popular?

These joints were always used for the cross-stretchers on antique chairs. I don't know why. Possibly as they could be made and glued in after all the other joints had been made and glued up, or possibly because they had a lot of resistance to being pulled apart in a narrow rail. They do...

    Drive spur

If you hand sharpen it, it would be a good idea to mark one of the spurs and make sure you mark where that spur goes on your workpiece. Then when you take it off the lathe, you can replace it with the spurs in the same hole.

    Blum drawer slide layout question

I had one of those jigs, it was expensive and hard to use. I ended up making one- as in the picture. The ply piece is exactly twice as wide as the distance from the centre of the screw holes to the bottom of the runner, and the holes are in the middle and spaced accordingly. The bit of solid is...

What to use for a new router base?

Tufnol is my favourite. It's almost indestructible.

15mm vs 18 mm MFC or MDF

15mm can be a bit thin for some applications. I try to use 15mm for the sides of cabinets, and 18mm for tops bottoms and shelves. This seems to work best with biscuiting or domino-ing cabinets together. The 15mm sides make an appreciable difference to the weight of a tall wardrobe, which shows...

    small mouldings

If it's a little bit, how about a scratch stock? I made one about 30 years ago with 2 scraps of beech and some bits of old saw blade. Despite having 4 routers and a spindle moulder, I still use it once in a while.

Have you looked at the dewalt or trend copies? I don't know if they are exact but it's worth a try
