Drawers - how do you rabbet yours?

Yes. I did it once only, in 2010, was hauled over the coals by you, accepted the lesson, and learned from our interaction. Wrote it up here. Now I do it this way ... :giggle: Regards from Perth Derek

Drawers - how do you rabbet yours?

Richard, I viewed this video shortly after it was posted on YouTube, and made these same comments to the author. He had a hissy fit - just could not accept any disagreement. His argument was that he had published the slip-making design in a magazine, and therefore it must be correct. (Quercus or...

    Plough planing small parts

Making a sticking board is worth the effort if you plan to use it going forward. Otherwise, if you have a hold down, make a Doe's Foot. Very simple to do and its stength is preventing a board moving sideways (which a planing stop does not do) ... Regards from Perth Derek

    Plough planing small parts

Make a sticking board. This one is adjustable ... Great for planing small parts ... Grooving this time ... Regards from Perth Derek

Dining Room Carver Chairs - Take 2

This is, hopefully, the penultimate post on these chairs. I was unsure whether to post this one since the changes and progress sequence must appear so small to all, yet I am aware of how much work goes into shaving, shaving, shaving ... And there is still more to do, as well as more shaping to...

    Need to escape/reset

Stig, I have been keeping up with the situation, but said my piece (twice) early on. My advice has not changed, but does not appear to have been accepted. Please keep in mind that I am a professional in this area. So here it is again: stop treating the symptom (the mess) and instead treat the...

Exciting News! The Melbourne Tool Company has landed

Rob, I hollow grind all my blades, BU and BD. BD plane blades get ground at 30 degrees, and I hone freehand on the hollow. However, unlike a BD plane, the bevel angle on a BU plane needs to be specific - a little here or there .. when tearout control is important ... makes all the difference in...

Exciting News! The Melbourne Tool Company has landed

All hand planes, whether BU or BD need a cambered blade. The amount of camber depends on the type of plane. I had the great pleasure to have road tested all the BU planes for Veritas since they began producing them. Cambering a high angle BU plane blade was condered to be a daunting task since...

    Car wheel security nut

Jacob, that does not look like a anti-theft bolt. They usually have an unusual pattern and require a matching socket. The "big nut" looks just like a big nut - why you well ask? Example ... Regards from Perth Derek

Dining Room Carver Chairs - Take 2

I have found that the shaping of the chair arms and back to be a complicated process, with a step forward, then sideways, and then another step forwards. It is not plain sailing. There are many small corrections to make as I proceed, and I dare not attempt to leave these until a later date. I...

Dining Room Carver Chairs - Take 2

Back on the job after 3 weeks hiking mountain trails in the South Islands of New Zealand, then returning home with Bronchitis (although I was wearing a mask on the plane, passengers preferred to sit with the crying babies than listen to me cough and wheeze!). A few more weeks to recover. First...

    Mortise & tenons Cutting accurately

Two methods: 1. Saw the shoulders on a tablesaw with a stop to enable the rail to be flipped. Then resaw blade on a bandsaw, using the fence for a guide. Obviously, test cuts are required. 2. Tenon saw. If needed, clean up with a rasp or router plane. If you want a fixture for hand sawing...

    Cars that make you smile

My current driver, which I have had for 18 years, is a 2002 Porsche Boxster S. Wonderful, wonderful car to drive. I tend to go for car which are a little different: I absolutely loved a 1965 Lancia Fulvia Coupe and a couple of SAAB 900s (one was a turbo - hugely fast!). But the car that everyone...

    ADHD and Mental Health

I am unsure how these matters function in the UK, but I can shed some light on why "20 years". Note that I am a clinical psychologist and specialise in ADHD, as well as having grown up as an ADHD kid (I recognised this when I was 40. I am now 74). ADHD was considered a diagnosable only in...

Hello from Scotland [and perhaps soon to be Australia !]

Consider Perth, Western Australia .... how could you resist a good Scottish name like that?! :) Laid back life style. Big city features in a large country town (population around 2 mil). Best weather in Oz - summer 9 months of the year. Best timber in Oz - look up Jarrah and SheOak. Lively...

Workshop Layout - help / inspiration needed

Doogs, what machines are going in? You need space for assembly. Do you need space for storing timber? Is your bench for hand tool, power tools or both? Where are power- and hand tools to be stored, and what in? Dust extraction? Combination machines save space. For example, my router table is...

    Organisation and workflow

As a shrink, I deal with these issues daily on a professional level. There can be a number of reasons, but the main one is poor organisational skills as you have identified. This is principally a lack of planning and a lack of direction, which leads to feeling overwhelmed by a world of seemingly...

Dashboard Hinge / Guid Rail Bracket

The Dashboard Hinge is a gorgeous piece of kit. It is expensive but I would argue that it is worth every penny. Several months ago I was curious about an MFT and built a bench. Since it was not going to replace my Hammer slider, laying out for a quality hinge was hard to justify. As a result...

Alternative to the festool ETS EC150

Hi Pete Since you state that the main use for the sander lies with edges, my recommendation is NOT to go with a ROS, but either ... 1. An orbital sander, if hand held, or 2. A small belt sander/disc sander combination, if you prefer a machine. Both can be had far cheaper than a Festool or...
